Why are Rentals so HIGH????

I haven't read everyones response so I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet.

In every military town I've lived in the rent seems to match BHA rates starting at about the E-5 paygrade and go up from there (for decent apartments and houses). BAH rates tend to increase every year and the landlords like to raise rent based on military BAH rates. The military is always chasing the rental costs with BAH rates, in reality the cost will never add up unless service menmbers buy a home and stay in it long enough for the BAH rates to exceed a mortgage payment.

I feel sorry for non miltary folks trying to rent in a military town because unless you want your young adult children living in bad neighborhoods they won't be able to afford to pay rent elsewhere.

Just my .02 cents.

My son just graduated from Longwood, right in the heart of Farmville. There are only a couple restaurants and shopping is Wally World.

I'm not knocking the place, it is actually a very nice, quaint town. If your someone likes that style of living so be it.

Fantastic!!!!!! I love the small quiet towns.

I live at home w/my mom, I pay her $400/month for rent, to pay basically for the utilities I use. I have a son now so the rent has been put off for awhile, which of course I have to pay back to her. Being a single mom(baby daddy said he would be there for me, when baby was born, he split, but I am waiting for my child support which should help ALOT.) Anyways, even w/child support and what I make, I know I couldn't afford to live on my own by any means. Considering the child support covers only day care ($185/week, which is cheap for an infant). I think if I had a room mate we may be able to make it living in this area, but trying to find something that is 3br/2ba or around that size is hard to come by when you can only afford about $600/month per person(thats including utilities).

What is nice though is that Verizon, Vonage, and those type companies have those package deals that you can get your phone, tv, and internet for like $50/month or something? I don't know..I know I couldn't do it right now!

What is affordable? $800 a month would be considered affordable wouldn't it? I have a friend who is a single mom who pays $600 a month plus utils making $12/hr. They sacrifice a lot of what today's kids take for granted such as no cable, no eating out, no video games and so on. One thing though is she is very proud to be on her own and making it. She is also raising a bright kid who spends time reading and learning instead of boob tubing it.

Just seems if she can afford $600 a person can work 2 jobs and afford $800.

I am renting a farmhouse in Charles county. 3 bed 2 bath full basement for 1150. I make good money and things still get tight for me sometimes. As someone else said sacrifice.... That is something I do not do well. I blow my money on things I want.... thats what happens when I don't have a woman behind me with the I can't wait to get out of MD, it's only a matter of time.

why do you have a 3 bed 2 bath if you're single

I see that you state you're not too great with money so I guess that could explain it

No my cousin and I are renting it together.

By not great with money for example.. I had a 32" LCD tv well that was not good enough for the new house so I went looking at a 73". I wound up settling for a 58" Plasma. I have the PS3 and Xbox 360 with about 60 games total. At $60 each it adds up. Bought a Suburban to replace my old Suburban because I was tired of that one. I have a brand new company truck so I don't even need my own. I also have 3 other vehicles I never use. I always say you get what you pay for so I never take the cheap route. Just spent $2,500 on a safe, couple thousand on some Misc toys. and I wonder where all my money goes

I graduated from college the year before last. When I left college, I had about 400 dollars to my name. I got job and got a 1 bedroom apt at the Apartments of Wildewood. $300 deposit.

I have $100 to my name. Grocerys for the first month were about $40. I ate a lot of Tuna Fish.

By the time I got my first paycheck I had a total of $3 in my bank and a bucket of loose change. I did not buy anything that was not needed. I slept on the floor of my apartment in a sleeping bag. The next month, after utilities, payments, and rent were paid I had about $300 for food, gas, etc. I ate more tuna fish and rode my bike to and from work. I bought a bed MATTRESS.

By the end of that I had about $50 left over. I spent about 2 months of hell so I could get out on my own two feet. Too scared that buying a bottle of mustard would put me in the negative, so I just took packets from WaWa.

2 years later, I have over $20k saved up, $8k in my 401k, I bought a ####ty (but NEW) car because my old one broke down, and I am quite pleased.

Teach your kids that they don't NEED much to survive and get by. If they want to live extravagently and blow money on crap that they certainly don't need, then they can expect to be living at home with mommy and daddy for quite a long time.
