The main thing that runs off propane is my cooking stove. I have a heater in the garage if I want to use it. I think I will use up whats in the tank and look into buying my own smaller tank and fill it myself as needed for cooking.

I'm not sure of the size but I'm gonna look at Lowes.

They're standing up by the wood stoves. check to see if you own or rent the gas regulator as well. You *may* need to have a gas company come out to install a regulator.

I had an electric cooktop, couldn't stand it; it was old and dirty and didn't work right, so one day I just pulled it and tossed it out. Got a new gas cooktop, but didn't hook it up yet, pending new counters, cabinets, 220V to 110V changeover, etc, etc, etc. SO, I have a board on top of the cooktop with my Coleman camp stove on top of the board hooked to a 20# bottle sitting on the floor. It's lasted all winter.....

Do you use it every day? That's amazing. My husband has been touting the merits of these things, maybe he's right. :) Of course the other products they make e.g. cordless drill have been crappy, in my experience.

Naw, couple times a week. I'm the only one in the house, so I don't need it that often, which is why it's still in this state!

Propane Cost

I just left a local propane company. If you want to know what the inside thought process is, just ask a question. You would be surprised. Any of you getting a $9.74 fuel surcharge. It is a scam. Peopale were not buying as much propane and they had to keep up their margins. It's all about the margins. Several years ago they would clear .25 to .30 cents a gallon. Now they want to be able to clear over $1.00 a gallon. The $2.99 admin fee you see on your bills is also a scam.

Online location for pricing of propane

check out the link below. it will give you the current wholesale price of a gallon of propane. This is what the companies that deliver the propane to you are paying for it. Some of the cost is because of higher crude oil prices but the contracts for buying propane this season were made with a set price back in the spring of 2007. If you talk with the propane companies about price ask them what the current "OPIS" price is for propane. Good luck. You should hear what the bonuses are each year for the few guys running the show if they screw you on pricing.

I wish there was something we all can do. I can't believe these company's will only charge you 2.75 -2.80 if you own your tank. My tank has been here for years and when I bought the house it stayed. They tell me its not owned and I'm charged 4.24 a gallon. How do I know the previous homeowners didn't buy the tank??

I will swapping out their tank for a smaller one where I can refill it as needed. I don't need a 300# tank.

Call the company and tell them you want to buy the tank. If they say no then tell them to come get it. Most companies will sell you a tank. Your tank is a 330 gallon tank. The propane companies believe they are even as far as the tank cost after 5 years. Anything after that is gravy. Don't be afraid to go with a new company. In the short term it will save you money. $4.24 a gallon. That has to be United Propane.
