Some CPU's can be overclocked - others cannot... some computers use a software program to change the "clock" to make it run faster... as you overclock, the CPU will run hotter - you must ensure you have proper cooling.

If you can, you overclock in steps... move the clock a bit faster and operate the computer for a few hours - if all is well, move up the next step... do the same. Keep going until the computer hangs, then back down a step and you are done....

Here are a couple of sites;

EXTREME Overclocking - Tweaking PC Hardware To The Max

Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

You can always go to Google and enter your computer Model and the word "overclock" and see what comes back...

The March 2008 issue of MaximumPC has an article on overclocking your video card that's pretty comprehensive.

There is also an article on some tweaks that can make your operating system run faster, Microsoft is notorious for assuming we're all dummies and the default settings are, shall we say, crap.

Another area of overclocking is your memory (RAM).

With all overclocking, go in small increments and read thoroughly so you understand just what you are changing in your system.

It can be fun, but requires alot of patience. Just don't blow everything up by being too aggressive right off the get go.

With 1.3mhz+, dual core processors common place now... Why chance trashing the CPU?

Do you really need Word 2007 to open .0000005 seconds faster?

you dont get enough out of it to be worth the instability it causes.

think about it, all PC manufacturers want to have the fastest unit on the market.
If it ran good clocked higher, do you not think the manufacturer would have done it in the first place?

It doesn't make a slow computer fast. Its basically for Geeks bragging rights that they got 123 frames per second running a game versus 117 frames per second....

Overclocking helped about 5 years ago. If you have an old Pentium/PII/PIII computer, you might be able to boost it up a bit. Nowadays, there's no real need or benefit, unless you're trying to get a little extra out of a video card for a game.
