Has smoking ban increased bar buisness?

I went to a bar last night, first time in a good while and it was packed. I asked a friend that frequents the place and he said thats twice the amount of people they use to get.

There are a lot more people that don't smoke than do.

I would think a nonsmoking bar back before the smoking ban would have cleaned up.

I don't go to bars, but the restaurants I've been to since the ban don't seem to be hurting at all. It'll be interesting to see if any numbers come out either way.

I love the idea of being able to go out and not having to worry about stinky smokes that make me sick to stomach. I am allergic to smoke and now, I can enjoy the outings more than before. I don't have to stay home all the time anymore to avoid smoky places.

So...

...if I have this straight, bar business is twice as much as it used to be yet the government had to ORDER business people to stop with the smoking so that they could double their business?

If it's true, doesn't it make you wish you'd started a chain of non-smoking bars before the ban? You could have made a killing! Oh well, too late now!

Unless, of course, a one time visit to a bar is a bit anecdotal and doesn't indicate a trend.

A buddy of mine bartends about 3 days a week part-time. He said the place has been packed more than usual since the smoking ban. He loves that he no longer goes home smelling like crap!

Yes, because non-smokers people are able to go out and enjoy the outings instead of staying home to avoid the smoky bars and resturants. The bars and resturants are raking in more businesses/monies than it was as a "smoking" bars and resturants.

I have no problems with people who wants to smoke. It is thier rights to enjoy the bad habits just like everyone else who want to drink too much sodas, bad fatty food, nail bitings, thumb sucking, drink too much to stay drunk all the time, have 16 cats in thier house that make thier home smell so bad, etc. Everybody have thier rights.

I noticed the opposite when I went out a few Friday's ago. I went out to a popular bar and it was empty and a few people that smoke went home to enjoy their cigarettes when they would have stayed longer (and ordered several more drinks) if they could have smoked. I thought to myself that it had to be hurting business. I guess it just depends on if you are a smoker or not. I do think it should be up to the owner of the place though and not the government.

The point was, why didn't these bars go non-smoking BEFORE the law was passed if there was so much more business to pick up? They're in business to make money, so why wouldn't they have done this before the ban?

And the other side of that is why didn't the non-smoking bars and restaurants we had before the ban do all that well?

This, frankly, makes no sense.

I really don't know. Maybe the business owners thought there are more "smokers" than non-smokers. Now, they are learning the "truth".

I agree that it makes no sense....
