I just looked at John's Pics. The only thing that kept them from dying on the spot was the fact that they backed into the pole. The seats and head restraints protected them. I'm not so sure they would have faired out as well if they hit nose on.

Ok, so this brings up a thought... design cars with the seats reversed. The driver drives from an LCD console and cameras mounted up front.

I must be missing a piece of the story - why were they backing up at 115 MPH? Trying to get away from the Police or just because they were drunk?

No, they were traveling forward, lost control and spun. When they hit the pole, they were tail-end first.
