Propane Prices

I know there was a thread on this a few weeks ago, but I didn't follow it closely. On 12/31/07 United Propane filled my tank and it cost me $375 and some change. Almost one month later, 1/28/08 they came and filled it again and it cost me $364 and some change. They came last week and now the bill is $396!!! I've never had electric heat so I'm curious how it compares. $400 a month is taking it's toll on this poor single Mother!!!! I keep the thermostat set to 70, so it's not like it's running all the time. What's everyone's thoughts?

If you see a cute woman on a corner in PF you know who it'll be!!!!

I had the same problem a few years back with excessive use.
my hot water heater and my stove/oven were running on propane.

I switched both to electric.
My electric bill went up by about 30 a month, but the propane had been costing me around 100 a month.

of course I did all the electric and installations myself.
As I remember the propane company was rather pissed that I did it and cut them out of a customer. They tried to charge me when the picked up their tank.

they said it would be a charge to pick the tank up of 50 bucks.
Then they said it would be a couple weeks before they could get it.
I told them they had till the end of the week to collect it, then I would start charging them a storage fee. (50 bucks a week)
I then sent a registered letter stating that fact.

at the end of three weeks they picked it up. and the left a bill for the 50 bucks.
so, I wrote out a bill for the fifty bucks a week storage fee for the two weeks totaling 100.00, I put the bill they left me in the envelope, and I applied that 50 to the 100. So, I sent them a bill for 50.
They then called and said that this was not acceptable and that the would take me to court to get the 50 if needed.

Im not sure exactly how it happened, but someone at the propane place screwed up and the following month, I got a check from them for 50 bucks to pay for the balance on the rental fee. So I cashed the check and sent them their 50.

basically I paid nothing, and they are happy with the fact that I paid.

have never heard from them again.

Its hard to compare when we dont know the size of the place you are heating.

When I moved into my present home 12 years ago I spent $750 for fuel oil heat
Last year it was $2700 and this year will go at least $3,000.

Energy prices are taking a toll on us all and ruining the economy, and still we cannot drill in our own nation for fuel.

Back when Mr. Bush was elected they told us that even if the drilled in Alaska it would be 8 years before we could use the oil. Well the 8 years are up, we havent drilled and
we still need the fuel.

prices still wont go down.
if prices drop, the shareholders of the oil companies are going to see losses,.

you cant go from making 10% profit on $4.00 to making 10% profit on $2.00 and expect the share holders to suck it up. fuel will not ever come back down. the best we can expect is that it will hang at a certain price level long enough for incomes to be able to absorb it again.

Sorry-I have a VERY small 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house. Maybe about 900 sq. feet. and I think it's the standard above ground stand up 500 pound tank. I swear to god United isn't putting in as much as they claim they are! I guess I would never know, but I just don't see how there's anyway that an adult and a child go through a whole tank a month. We're rarely ever home!

That does seem a bit excessive. What is the price per gallon? Is our furnance running properly?

If you have a 500 gallon tank ad only paying $396 for the propane, they are not filling you up entirely-meaning you still have propane. Ours are 200 gallon tanks (okay 220 total, but they only fill 80%) and we just paid $647 for an entire 200 gallon fill up. It is $3.16/gallon with Southern Maryland Oil. Ours is about 1500 sq. feet. We have heat pump back up.

So, what you can do is turn the heater down at night. We do about 67 degrees. And, keep it about 69 during the day. Some days I turn it up, but this way our propane lasts a bit longer.

Maybe I'm wrong about the size of my tank. I was just looking online for anything that looked about my size. It's just the standard one you see everywhere else, so maybe it's 200, I don't know! All I know is I'm about to start selling myself to pay the bills....any takers? LOL
