Looking to buy a home..is it possible?

We want to buy a home here in St. Mary's,with a absolute limit of 220,000. After looking on the Eastern Shore, this seemed to be an easy task, but here it is near impossible. Thus far most properties are in the dumpy areas of GM road,Essex,Patuxent homes, etc. But one thing I have noticed quite a bit is a HUGE number of reasonably priced homes in San Souci. I have never really thought of that area as being "bad",am I wrong? Is it more ghetto than I thought? Or is it maybe just an older area? We considered rolling through there at varying times of week, and day,to get a better scope of the neighborhood. If we find nothing decent here, our next option is moving to the Eastern Shore,to Salisbury. I am undecided - have any of you lived there/maybe went to school there and can give some info about the area? We chose that location because of the proximity to the ocean since we travel there often and also for the low cost of living, but that low cost must be for a reason. To me,there is not much to do here, and I sure would not want to go there and find a worse situation.

San Souci isnt the nicest place to live either.....

The Eastern Shore is fairly desolate in that there isnt much to do, and not much development (although its grown some over the years). I dont believe you will find as many bad areas as you will over here.

Depending upon what you're looking for in a house, i wouldnt say it is impossible to find something within your budget in St Mary's or Southern Calvert.

Our only real requirement out of necessity is that we need at least three bedrooms, and two baths - or one and a half. A big plus would be a basement since I have a child who is extremely fearful of storms and that is her biggest fantasy is to have a basement retreat!

Most of the houses in that area are double wide trailers on foundations.

You know,I thought that too when I saw them. But,they are not listed as mobile homes,so I thought maybe they were modular..or am I a retard and that is a fancy word for trailer?

I found the O'brien realty site Welcome to Obrien Realty very useful when i was house hunting. Their search works pretty well by letting you choose the area and features you desire, not ot mention not all of the houses are for sale by them, as they are usually all MLS listings. If you are working with a realtor, they can also check MLS for homes that fit what you're looking for. Mine did that regularly, and provided print outs of them for me to review.

The shore has some possibilities, but you'd be hard pressed to find a good paying job. Some areas of the shore are pretty darned isolated. I'm lucky that I was able to get a state job, but the pay isnt' all that great.
