I, like many, assume it okay to travel to a safer place in this type of situation. It would be nice to hear from the horse's mouth (a Maryland State Trooper) that it is okay to do so.
If the story were true, as you say the case was thrown out, to have a case there would have been at a minimum a citation and thus the name of the officer and badge number or is this a case that the woman had filed suit against the MSP and that is what was thrown out?

Some cops just turn into instant a$$holes if you don't do EXACTLY what they want you to do - IMMEDIATELY.

A cop got behind me - turned on his lights - the usual deal when pulling over someone to give them a ticket.

This was a busy roadway - two lane traffic both ways - with barely any shoulder to pull onto.

So, thinking that I was doing the officer a favor, waited to pull over until there was enough room so that he could get out of his car safely without fear of getting hit.

Bad move. He jumped out of his car - yelling at me: "why didn't you pull over!!"

I calmly explained to him that I was waiting until it was safe for him to get out of his car.

He proceeded to berate me: basically yelling at me that I'm supposed to pull over where ever you are - immediately.

Some of them are just dip####s with badges...

This “tale” angers me…I wonder why…oh, maybe because people like to take whatever information they can and post it in a forum with out knowing the FACTS. These facts do NOT fit the theory. Let me be the first to tell you that unless you are the police or a spouse of the police, you will never understand what this job entails and how much of a sacrifice it is. We leave our families in the middle of the night to protect yours; will miss the opportunity to open presents on Christmas morning with our children and family so that the man that is still drunk from the night before does not cause an accident hurting someone else’s loved one on such a joyous morning. Every time we gear up to go out on duty, our spouses and children understand what we are up against. You put on your pants and shoes; we put on a bullet proof vest and a gun. Your job requires you to work overtime, our job requires us to stay out late to risk our lives for an individual who is strung out on crack and is combative, threatening our lives and the lives of or families and children. Of course the story you hear is that this poor middle aged woman did nothing wrong….just like the average poor old middle aged person was only holding those drugs for a friend... little do you know he was about to offer them to your teenager. Let me be the first one to tell you, there are FAR MORE important things happening around here than a middle aged woman running a stop sign. WAKE UP! We are surrounded by rapists, child molesters, murderers, drug addicts and prostitution, therefore; it is highly unlikely that an officer is going to pull a woman out of her car and arrest her for something so minor while there is a drug deal or a murder taking place right around the corner. So the next time you see or hear of something like this, ask yourself….’do the facts fit the theory?’ If the answer is ‘no’, as it is in this case, leave it alone. So typical that the kind of person that writes these kinds of things are the very ones who call someone in for speeding on a back road and then flash their lights for them to slow down when a speed trap is set to protect others. Or one who bashes the police but is quick to call them to their aid. For the little bit that the police are paid for the great sacrifice that is made, I have ZERO tolerance for ignorance such as this. Now, I am truly sorry if the truth has offended any of you, however, this is where I stand. Don’t bash it unless you understand it….and you don’t understand it until you have lived it. So go ahead and talk all the smack you want...but when you are in need of help, who do you think is responding when you ask for assistance from the police when you call 911? Think about it.

With that being said, perhaps YOU are the one who owes the MSP an apology.

What does this rant have to do with the original question?

You’re alone diving in your car. It is a dark night, bright flashing lights appear behind you. A police officer? Do you proceed to a more lighted area before pulling over?
Just in case you missed the question...

A little over the top, don't you think?

Hum.....read the original post to the end. I have no desire to answer the question. It was a ridiculous story to begin with. Over the top, not so much. If YOU were in this line of duty, you would understand, however; just as I stated in my post, unless you live it, you do not understand it. Try devoting your life to protect prople, like you, who live to make idle chit chat and pulling things apart. It is frustrating.
