Has Anyone Been on a Head Boat?

I've been researching some alternatives to shore fishing in the county, and I came across a site for the rod and reel that has something called a head boat. Its only $55 per person to go out and 'bottom fish' versus true angling for at least $500 a half day. I was just wondering, has anyone tried this, and if so...was it worth the $55 bucks. Did you catch anything? Was it still an overall good day?

I would be afraid of catching herpes on my rod.

What do you consider "true angling"? Fishing is fishing whether you are bottom fishing for croaker, chumming for rock and or blues or drifting for flounder, or trolling for whatever.

A head boat is a "general admission" type deal, you go out with a bunch of folks you don't know and just fish. This is perfect for those who want to go out but do not have enough people or $$ to pay for a true charter.

They are called head boats because they charge people by the head.

I went on the Rod n Reel trip one time for my birthday, worse time I had in my life. The boat was packed, people were shoulder to shoulder, kids running everywhere getting caught in lines, a couple of kids got fish hooks caught in them. The mates were so busy babysitting, they couldn't take care of the people that were actually fishing. I sent them a letter after the trip and all they said was "sorry you did not enjoy your trip". I'd rather fish from shore.

Head Boat FAQs
How do I buy tickets?
Tickets go on sale at the tackle shop only on the day of the trip. It’s first come first serve, and the head boat accepts only cash. Buy only the number of tickets you are sure to use. No refunds.

What about coolers?
One medium size cooler (no more than 56 quarts) per person is recommended. Ice is available in the tackle shop.

What about tackle?
Light tackle is all you need. As long as your rod will accommodate 3 oz. of weight, that’s fine. Outfit with a top and bottom rig and #2 snelled hooks. If you need to rent a rod, they are available on the boat for $5.

What about bait?
Your ticket includes one package of bait. Additional bait is available.

What about food?
There is a galley on the boat with sandwiches, snacks and sodas. You are also welcome to bring your own.

HEAD boats... think really HARD.

I can't believe they charge for rod rentals and "one package of bait" to me that's a rip off. They are other head boat options around the bay.
