Welcome to Southern Maryland!

Please throw all of you lit cigarette butts out the window.

We ask that you refrain from spitting a single sun flower seed shell out the window due to the repulsive appearance of sunflower seeds.

Give a hoot don't pollute.

Wow... didn't know this would generate so much. What I couldn't understand was that he was over a car length in front of me in the left lane. He then hit his brakes so I went by then got behind with the lights. I still don't understand how he saw that. He told me after I showed him the seeds that he saw us throw a hundfull out previously. We had just started eating them. I think he wanted to look in the van which he did a bit before coming up to the window. I was driving an old Caravan which is rough looking that we use to haul junk and big stuff from Lowe's etc. I think he was suspisious of the van for some reason.
As for my son, when he told us why he pulled us over, we both at the same time said a word about the male anatomy that meant the same but was two diff. words. Mind you, my son usually does not speak that way around me but we were sorta shocked. I explained to my son, since he drives, that you have to be very careful when driving because they are watching CLOSELY!
I do want him to respect law enforcement.

Unbelievable, thanks for the warning! I just sent this to everybody on our team; Beware of the end of the month unofficial MSP sunflower seed quota.
How come this trooper can see a seed tossed out of a window at 55 yet nobody sees the 3000 to 5000 pound vehicles going through red lights in LP city?

It was the beginning of the month and they were stopped at a light. Did you read the post before you replied?

I'd bet the cop saw an arm throwing something out the window and didn't know what it was. That's littering, no matter what it was. It was probable cause to stop the vehicle and investigate. The cop then only gave the guy a warning, which is absolutely reasonable.

The law is on the books, and it is the cops job to enforce it. If you don't like the law, blame the legislators who wrote it, not the cop who is obligated to enforce it.

All of that is reasonable if all of the laws on the books are enforced just as vigorously. The problem becomes with all of the things going on in this county is a sunflower seed (yes I know it's littering) going out of a window the best use of this officer's valuable time. It may be a legitimate use but it is the best use of his time. It littering is a real problem why not increase the patrol of the secondary roads? That is where the real littering is taking place. They won't do that because it is not "sexy" enough. I wonder how many people were doing 65mph down the road at the same time. More likely the cop thought he had him a drug dealer bust on his hands (beat up van, being the dead giveaway) and thought littering would be probable cause for the stop.

Does that answer the question of which is easier to see: the cars going through red lights over and over at almost every intersection at every red light cycle or an arm throwing a half a seed hull out the window of a moving car?
My vote is fishing for something sexier than a littering violation.

Do you think that the cop wouldn't pull over the red light runner if he/she saw them?

You put a plain brown wrapper (unmarked squad car) on traffic duty between Rt 4 and the base. Could be a great way to train the newest deputies in handling the "very polite" public. Have them do a loop for a shift. Then see how many red light runners you catch during one. What's the fine on that?
Putting marked cars on the road as a deterrent does work. Look at the skid marks on 235 whenever somebody sees one as they approach a light.
However, somebody's relative, friend or associate is going to get killed by an idiot running a light - and soon - it's getting worse every day.

Catching somebody spitting a seed? Come on, great way to get your point across.
I'll be looking over my shoulder now every time I drive to or from a little league game.
