Officers who will relive those events time & time again trying to assure themselves they did the right thing. Even waking them up at night...

Internal investigations, accusations, denials, and an extensive report...while the cops drive a desk for the next couple months.

In many cases, a civil suit will follow that the county (us tax payers) have to work through the court system with hearings, appeals, and possible a settlement out of court into the millions of $$$.

So,...although I appreciate a QUICK application of justice, sadly there is a lot of baggage that follows for months if not years ahead.

Will the officers err toward hesitation next time a situation comes up???

Thank you for this! Hubby shot and killed someone 3 years ago and still has nightmares!. It was justified and a situation of kill or be killed. WE will live with this for the rest of our lives. For once PG county didnt settle the family lawsuit and it was dismissed. Can you believe the family sued for over 50 million!!!!

I hate to pry...

but , did the district offer counseling to your husband?
did they offer a reassignment?

The reason why I am asking is that this side of the "shoot" is rarely understood or discussed. I am 100% certain officers carry a lot of emotional baggage around after a tense few seconds...

After 6 years, I realized I didn't have the patience to deal with all the bs anymore and changed careers.
Took me one year teaching to figure out I wasn't going to get any support from the administrators. I had a mother call me a racist because I sent her darling to the Principal after the little twerp pointed a rifle at me and said "Bang, you're dead!". Right in front of the entire class.

The principal just sat there. Disgusting.

That was eight years ago. I think the student graduated last year and now is working at Wal-Mart.

If there is a buck in it, attorneys will flock to the family. Why do folks think the government is made of money?

We had a PG County cop rear end us (while moving!). PG County paid the cost of the truck. The young man fell asleep at the wheel. It could have been worse. We certainly didn't sue for millions and we felt we got a fair settlement. Sometimes the public forgets that cops are just human too, with a tough job. Not one that I'd want.

Counseling was offered and used by my husband and myself for as long as we wanted it. It took almost 4 months before he was cleared to returned to duty. We are taught all our lives that killing is wrong, so when you have to take a life it really affects you. I cant even begin to imagine what the service men and women who kill in combat go through.

Murder is Wrong, Killing in Self Defense or in Defense of others is / can be justified ...

Seems to be a common issue - it's more important to them to avoid being sued than to enforce the rules. One of the poor classroom aides, in her 60's, was shoved by one of the little punks. She landed on her knee and slid down the hallway on her knee for a good 10 seconds. She needed knee surgery and was out of work for about 6 weeks. Guess what the principal said?! You're gonna love this one. We needed to expect that type of behavior from these children due to their difficult home lives. In addition, she tried to force the aide to use her paid time off, instead of putting it through workers comp. Are you effen kidding me??!! It was at that moment that I realized I had already wasted enough time in school for teaching (I was almost done). I finished out the school year and told them I wouldn't be back in the fall.
