I always acknowledge what a tough job these cops have. I'm so glad that you both took advantage of the counseling offered. I don't care how tough you are, going through something like that will take time to get your lives back to "normal". The main thing is that he understands that he did what he had to and it's better that some thug is dead instead of him.

Cops have it tougher, imo. You don't know who is going to try and kill you. Similar to what's happening now in Iraq, and similar to Nam. Can't tell who the enemy is.

The counseling is important, helps keep your head on straight. The world is really pretty nasty out there.

If your husband wasn't upset, he wouldn't be human.

Internal investigations, accusations, denials, and an extensive report...while the cops drive a desk for the next couple months.

In many cases, a civil suit will follow that the county (us tax payers) have to work through the court system with hearings, appeals, and possible a settlement out of court into the millions of $$$.

So,...although I appreciate a QUICK application of justice, sadly there is a lot of baggage that follows for months if not years ahead.

Will the officers err toward hesitation next time a situation comes up???
I know of a PG Officer who was involved in a fatal shooting back in January of this year, the one where a prison immate overpowered 2 guards at Laurel Hospital and carjacked several cars during the day and then led police on a chase into a cemetary in Suitland where he opened fire on several officers who all returned fire and killed the suspect.
This shooting was very justified, but its been over 4 months now and all those officers are still on admin leave, at least the one I know of is still out.

I have NO degree in psychology, but...wouldn't it make sense to get these officers back on the job? There is a VERY deeply felt sense of duty among the officers and to have them spend time off OR doing meaningless tasks seems counterproductive. These "shields" need to know they are needed back at their posts.
TRUE, some emotionally should not return: understandable.
However, DUTY calls........routine helps ease the doubts. Work accomplishes things.>This helps the healing process.

(Maybe I should go to the public Library and rent a few seasons of Hill Street Blues)

It takes so long to return to duty because the department has to clear you of wrong doing and so does the states attorney. We all know PG does not move fast. My husbands first shooting was fatal and he was out for almost 4 months. The second shooting he didnt hit his target and he was out for 3 months.

Funny that you mention Iraq, because my Dad and I have said for years now...."All Jailed offenses should be sent to Iraq to fight in the war", then it will low cost in many ways. I mean our troops are over there in 110 degree heat living in tents, and they don't #####! So send thess stupid *** offenders over there to pay the price for crimes commited. Just thought I would put that out there!

I assume you both have never served in the military? Thats about the stupidest idea I've read in a long time.

Now, if only there were some way the average, law-abiding citizen could defend themselves from these thugs, some way that the thug couldn't tell which potential victim was capable of self-defense, wouldn't that give the thug pause? Some way...

The principal just sat there. Disgusting.

That was eight years ago. I think the student graduated last year and now is working at Wal-Mart.
Shame on that principal for not protecting you! May I ask if this was in Charles County, or Calvert. What age group were you teaching.
I don't blame you for leaving--it's a shame that teachers can't do their job in a safe enviorment. (did I spell that correctly?)
