| (Another) Get Together at Steak in a Sack - May 17 On Saturday May 17th, starting at 1 p.m., there will be another local get together at Steak in a Sack, in the Marlow Heights Shopping Center, and we’ll be there and in the ‘Heights the good part of the afternoon. Right now approximately 15 people have said they’d show up, including some that may come in from out of the area. Besides partaking of an original, calorific, and greasy Steak in a Sack, you’ll enjoy talking to other people that grew up in Marlow Heights and vicinity of the 60s and 70s—you may even run into someone you knew. Last time my 5th grade teacher from Sandymount, Ms. Doyle, showed up, and she’s going to try to show up again. For those that have the time to stick around, we’ll do a, “tour”, of Marlow/Hillcrest Heights afterwards. At the last get together, we walked the entire Marlow Heights Shopping Center, Iverson Mall, and then went to Potomac, Stoddert, and many elementary schools. Here are photos of the get together on March 29th, as well as a write up of this happening:

It bears repeating to those of you that may be apprehensive about visiting Marlow/Hillcrest Heights. It actually isn’t such a bad place. Bad things do happen, and to be sure, I’d be very careful where I went at night there. But bad things also happen in all over the DC metro area. Just a couple of weeks ago, for example, there was a home invasion in exclusive Chevy Chase. Unfortunately, some local media outlets, and just plain folks, LOOK for bad news to come out of PG County. If you’d like to join us for a get together, but fear for your safety, those fears are probably exaggerated. Also keep in mind that we’re in a fairly busy retail area, and in a large group, during the daylight hours. I also recently spoke with the Chief of Police for the Marlow Heights Shopping Center Special Police Department (who used to work with my Dad, who was Chief of Police then), and he told me that Marlow Heights Shopping Center had the lowest crime rate for all shopping centers in PG County. Don’t let bad press and old stereotypes deter you from enjoying yourself and seeing the old neighborhood. You’d be amazed how much the area hasn’t really changed that much.
Anyway, if you want to show up, no RSVP required—just come on May 17th at 1 p.m. or so and get ready to enjoy a trip down Memory Lane. If you prefer, you can email me and I’ll pass on my cell if you would feel more comfortable calling to confirm where the group is.
