I was shocked when I read the paper because I have a child in high school and had investigated the drop out rate last year. They skew the statistic (of 2.73% dropout rate) by measuring the number of dropouts against the entire high school population, grades 9 - 12. Even accounting for that, you do not end up with 40 percent dropping out. What is going on with these statistics, and who is right??? Where did that article get their statistics? I'd like to see it for myself! If the article is right, the school district is full of it on their performance report. The link for the performance report is: 2007 Maryland Report Card: Saint Mary's County | |

| It's not just St. Mary's and by your writing you should have stuck to public schools.

| I know I took my son out of school because he was failing miserably and was getting no help what so ever from his teachers. I tested him to see where he was and this child was supposed to be in 10th grade level and he could only do 8th grade work, sometimes 6th grade work. They were just pushing him through! It makes me angry and I think the St. Mary's County school system SUCKS and needs to be completely overhauled! JMHO ![]() |

| I came into Great Mills as a freshman in 1991. We were the largest freshman class they'd had at about 250 students. By the time we graduated, only 87 walked. Granted, some were military kids who moved in the previous years. Others moved to Leonardtown HS to get away from the ghetto-ness of Great Mills. But many of my peers just stopped going. One by one they fell off the radar. I don't know how those stated statistics are computed, but I do know that if the school is anything like it was 15 years ago, the dropout rate has to be at least 30%. |

| Hell, just reading posts on here speak volumes about the graduates. ![]() Remember the kid with the resume thread? I stand behind my post that Chopticon should be embarrassed for graduating him.
