I would have to say yes.
You Join the Army or Marines these days and you can pretty much bet on participating in ground combat.
Navy and Air Force not so much. In theater there is always the possibility of rocket/motar attack or in the case of the Cole, a sucide small boat. Having been a shipboard sailor, it was my experience that very few people had access to a trigger.

Aps, you set yourself up for that one....

PS,
Pick a technical rating and join up. Even if you only do one enlistment you'll go places, see things, and make lifelong friends.
What Squadron's were you in & when? Fellow P-3'er/EP-3E'r here..

If your interested in school, join the Navy and apply for the STA-21 program. Google it for more info. You will be eligible for it after your "A" school is complete. STA-21 is a college program that enrolls you in a college ROTC program at a major university for a 4 yr degree. Well worth it. Also, if you do join, dont just prep for bootcamp, Prep for the ASVAB test. This is more important than preping for bootcamp. Whether you graduate with honors or not makes no difference in the fleet. Your ASVAB score will dictate what jobs your eligible. The better you do on the test, the more jobs you'll be eligible for.

HSL-30, VP-30, VP-49, FASO JAX, VP-23, VX-1 and OUT! Cold War Warrior, Gulf War I, several dust-ups in the Med and Caribbean, all long ago. Now working on this new-fangled P-8A Poseidon, we'll get it right.

Why is anyone telling him to join the Navy? I think that if you are not wanting to fight for this country than you shouldnt join a force that is made to defend our country. Granted not many people wish to be shot at or die most do join for the sake of defending our country. If that is not your main reason for joining then we really do not need someone else join for no reason more than the benefits. We need people in the military who are wanting to fight for our country and freedom.

Oh stop! Just because he chooses a path in the military that doesn't put him on the front lines doesn't mean that whatever role he plays is any less important.

I didn't join the military to go off and fight a war. I joined because I was bored and college didn't interest me. Best thing I ever did.

Gunners mates on the deck gun/small arms and the techs running the CIWS and the missles were the only ones that actually pulled a trigger.
