My dog has an issue with pooing in front of people. Maybe yours is the same? Too bad about not having a fence. Maybe get a lead that you can stake out in your backyard and let her have her privacy to do her business??

If he has an accident I would show it too him and tell him he is a bad boy and crate him for 30 minutes. Then put him out as soon as you let him of the crate and praise him like he is the best thing since sliced bread! You might even give him 1 small treat. It's called positive reinforcement. But don't over do it with the treats or you'll have a fat dog in no time. Good Luck, if you need anymore help just google house training puppies and you should come up with a lot of sites.
Do not ever ever make a crate a place of punishment!!!!!!

We are going to move at the beginning of the new year. But until then I am going to have to be stricter on my schedule. Its hard with having two kids but i can do it. My Rott used always pee on my brother leg when he came over...lol! I am glad he stopped that since we have to leave him with him.

That is so funny; we just adopted a Papillon mix 2 weeks ago. He prefers to do his business in the tallest weeds he can find. We figured he is shy or embarassed.
He is a sweet doggie, though and he has found a good home with us :-)

2 things.

1. Buy a crate big enough only for your puppy to get up and turn around in. Dogs don't like to be dirty, so if your crate is too big he will do his business in a corner, and then sit in another clean corner. Your dog definitely won't like sitting in his own excrement. Every time puppy comes out of crate, take him right outside, and say "Outside" to associate it to him. That way after he gets trained, when he acts like he wants something and you don't know what it is, say "outside" and he should react, telling you that yes he needs to go outside.

2. When taking your pup outside, as soon as s/he squats to his/her business, give him his favorite treat. The only thing that worked for my Yorkie was to give him a small piece of chicken. He knew that when he did his business outside that he would get a piece of boiled chicken. I would just boil a chicken breast, cut it up into pieces, and then put it away in the fridge.

Always keep a close eye on pup, because when you're not looking that's when they do their business. Really hammer that crate training into pup. Give puppy certain times to be out to eat, drink, and play, and then back into crate he goes.

This strategy was passed on to me 6 years ago by a Petco dog trainer, and it totally saved me from taking puppy back to the breeder after 3 months of failed house training. Good luck!
