Get ready to help a fabulous young woman with a very serious problem. The Kingfish Foundation is holding a fundraiser for Cheryl Holliday on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 4 to 10 p.m. at the Lusby American Legion, 11820 H.G. Trumann Highway in Lusby.
Holliday, 28, grew up in Calvert and Prince Georges counties and, due to a long list of debilitating symptoms and misdiagnosis, has been unable to work since 2007. Finally, in January 2008, she learned she had chronic Lyme disease.

The health insurance Holliday purchased through her job at Home Team Pest Defense covered only one month of the medications she needs. Despite the fact that Holliday has paid for health insurance for years, after one month, the company refused to pay for any of her treatment.

This is the standard mode of operation with all insurance companies because the CDC has deemed to be the treatment for lyme disease. It's completely wrong when it comes to treating anyone who has had lyme for a long period of time and it went undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

Even if you are financially able to pay for your own treatment, it is often times very difficult to find a doctor who will take on the task of treating lyme aggressively and long term. Reason being, health insurance companies have been known to go after physicians who do so, and try to have their medical license revoked.

We were extremely fortunate to find a "lyme literate" doctor when my daughter had lyme, but from what I hear he is no longer taking anymore lyme patients, which is a shame because he knew what he was doing and my daughter went from not being able to walk to being completely symptom free for well over 5 years now.

I wish this girl the best, she's got a long road ahead of her.
