this should be interesting; a curving road with little slope that leads directly to the intersection that you're expecting people to use to get to RT.4? Where they expecting everyone to park? Which county brain-child figured all this out?

Derby Race

I guess I would be that brain-child which figured all this out. You see since I have been to over 100 derby races in the last 3 years and we could nolonger race in Leonardtown, that we needed a new place to hold this event. Since we need about 700 feet of paved racing surface and Patuxent Blvd. has almost 1300 ft of hill I figured it would suit our needs. There will be plenty of hay bales set far enough from the intersection along with the Sheriffs Office personnel monitoring the Mill Cove Intersection to eliviated any problems. For parking if you had ever been to Leonardtown to see the race it doesn't take much parking space for this event. We have 24 racers and plenty of side road parking to accomodate them all. As afar as the turn it will not be a problem when you lay out your race lanes the are straight so a small curve in a road is actually non existent. I have looked at several areas to hold this and this road sections causes little impact to the residents or others in that area. If you have another area in mind that can be used for this annual event Please contact me my information is on the following website www.smdsbd.com or stop by tommorrow and cheer on our local kids. Two of them will be headed to Akron Ohio in July to race against kids from 41 US states and 7 Countries. The 2007 and 2008 World Champions will be there showing there support. Both of these young ladies are from St Mary's County so stop by and show your support for our local kids.

Addition : The race actually starts at 9:00am with most racers showing up around 7:30 to 8:00. The road closure is set from 5:00 am to 6:00 pm to setup tear and down our race timers and starting ramps and clean up. We have no intentions of leaving this area any different than in the way it was orginally.

VERY good reply, and sounds like a well thought out plan.

Hope for a good day of racing for all involved.

My plan would have been to shut down the bridge.. and you could have had TWO races going on at the same time... one going North from the Top, one going South from the Top.. I mean, that is the longest steepest hill in SoMD..

Once the kids got used to the height and the rocking of the bridges they would have had a lot of fun.. I'm PRETTY sure the Jersey barriers would stop a soap box car from going over the edge.... and the speeds??
