Rabid Kitten Prompts Infection Fears in Annapolis

The discovery of a rabid kitten outside the Sears store at the Westfield Annapolis shopping center Wednesday spurred county health officials to seek out anyone who might have come in contact with stray cats in that area in the past two weeks.

Rabies can be spread when an infected animal's saliva comes in contact with a person's or animal's eyes, nose or mouth, or an open cut. The kitten was described as a black shorthair, about 8 to 10 weeks old.

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health can be reached at 410-222-7256.

"Rabies can be spread when an infected animal's saliva comes in contact with a person's or animal's eyes, nose or mouth, or an open cut. "

I didn't realize it was spread that easily.....eyes, nose or mouth....so that means it could potentially be spread if the animal hissed etc? that's scary.

It was explained to us that it sounds easier to contract than it really is. Hard to believe it was 23 years ago that we were fostering a kitten that had rabies.

now that's really scary. I've met a few other people who have been in contact with critters who had rabies.

sometimes I think I should go ahead and get vaccinated for rabies. If I see a cat or dog in need, I don't always think first, I just act.

Yep..we all had to get the shots. Me, Ott and the three kids. The shots aren't bad..not like they say on tv, etc. Just regular shots..not in the belly like they used to be many years ago.

So, was it a fear-mongering right wing conservative Republican kitty, or a flaming socialist eco-nut liberal kitty?
