License Plate Readers at Calvert Checkpoints

MSP Automated License Scanner Picks Up Handful of Violations
CALVERT COUNTY - 9/6/2009

On Sept. 3, at 5 p.m., Troopers from the Prince Frederick Barrack conducted a sobriety checkpoint on MD Route 260 (Chesapeake Beach Road) near Wesley Stinnett Boulevard in Chesapeake Beach.

During the checkpoint, an automated license plate scanner was also used. This device scans passing plates and automatically runs them through MVA databases. During the event, 1,009 vehicles were checked by troopers at the checkpoint and 2,280 license plates were scanned.
The statistical results are as follows: Two DUI arrests, one drug arrest, four open warrants served, four suspended tags, seventeen suspended driver’s licenses, nineteen Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program suspensions, and five MSP tag pickup orders.

Wow! I read about CC getting one (or was it two?) of them. Glad I am a Legal Beagle!

What's a " MSP tag pickup order"? Just curious...

Maryland State Police. It means that their tags were ordered for pick up do to an insurance violation or other violation through the Motor Vehicle Association.

St Mary's has one if not two..

I keep seeing one at Cedar Point FCU late in the afternoon.

I wonder the legality of checking a plate that is VALID, and stopping the care because the plate check came back with a suspended license?? Ones not connected to the other... doesn't seem to pass the sniff test to me.

The reader is very simple. It reads tags. Valid tags are valid. However the tag then runs the registered owner's license status and/or NCIC check for warrants etc.

Then the car is stopped.
