new school cell phone pollicy?

St. Mary's County new cell phone policy states the cell phone must be off from the first bell to the last. Do you think the new policy will work? I asked because the kids I talked to said no. What do you think? As you know, kids these days can text, using the cell phone will keeping it completely out of sight. It doesn't sound like some kids know how serious St. Mary's County is about this new policy. At last they appear to be serious. Time will tell by next year.

Sounds like the same policy they use in Calvert Co. My son goes to Huntingtown High School and says they are very strict about it. I think he said they confiscate the phone for misuse but i don't know for how long.

12 years ago, when I was going to school here, cell phones were not allowed on school grounds. I think most parents would have a sh*t fit if that were the case today...but I applaud the schools for banning their use. Maybe some kids will get away w/txting and whatnot without being caught...but others WILL be caught and will serve as an example to either be more secretive or follow the rules.

And since a big part of school (unintentionally, of course) is learning when you can buck the rules :)...I think that falls in line w/what the kids would be learning anyway :)

i saw one thing that said they confiscate them and give them to the childs parent (they have to go to the school and pick it up) they don't give them back to the child. That is what I heard for here in stmarys county. Wouldn't that be a pain as most parents are still at work when the kids get home from school and school offices are closed by the time the parents get there to go it unless they take time off from work to go first thing in the morning.

It wouldn't be a pain if parents and children followed the rules.

Sometimes the best way to alter the behavior of kids----is inconvenience the parents---who should be making their kids behave anyway.

I think it is wrong to ban cells in school. We are a society that needs our IP to function. Without the phone, how will the kid know how to get to their next class? How will they know what is for lunch? How will they know when to get on the bus to go home? How will they know what the teacher's name is? A cell ban in school will be the ruination of our great nation!

In my daughters school the teachers have receivers that beep when any radio signal is being transmitted near it. If the kid texts, the receiver beeps and the teacher takes the phone.

Only takes a few animalistic children putting society in serious danger before the rest figure out that texting while learning can lead to extreme harm to those around them.

Not to mention that I can always go on line and check the times that the texting or calls were made. I don't need the teacher to stop my daughter from texting, I will take care of it as soon as I see it on the details.

Ok I can understand of children having a phone. But is it used in any of the courses of the day. Is really a necessity to have in the classroom and for the purpose of ???.

I admit it has been along time since I was in school. But What I see like going to a job interview is people younger than me using the phone to calulate equations or texting somebody else for the answer to a question they do not know or qualified to answer if they have to ask somebody else.
So with out the phone they become what? unknowledgable and have to depend on the phone to figure life challeneges. I feel sorry for them if the battery went dead

Well, if the parent(s) can't get to the school, I guess the kid will go without until the parent can get to the school. Hopefully, the kid will think twice about breaking the rule if they're phoneless for a couple of days.
