An easy method of telling the difference between a venomous or poisonous versus a non-poisonous snake is to look at the shape of the pupil. Non-poisonous snakes all have a round pupil (in the center of the eye) whereas all poisonous snakes have a vertical elliptical (cat-like) shaped pupil. I have never seen a snake around here that looked like that before.

It appears to be a trouser snake. Very common in Southern Maryland.

Okay, who's going first to look a snake in the eye?

It's definitely not a copperhead. The markings and coloring aren't correct. And it's head, while more arrow/diamond shaped looking than most non-venomous snakes, it is not fat enough at the base to be a copperhead (nor is the point of its nose pronounced enough). And from the pictures, I don't see pronounced "pits" behind the eyes (why various poisonous snakes like copperheads are referred to as "pit" vipers). Nor is it a Northern Water Snake, commonly mistaken for Copperheads.

It's definitely a corn snake, as you've been told, and a good fella to keep around. Please don't kill it. It's actually a beneficial creature to have around (keeps rodents and pest populations under control).

While harmless, it's sharp serrated jaw of teeth are still capable of puncturing skin but are used only for grasping its victim so it can constrict it to death and swallow it. The biggest danger from being bitten by a black rat snake or corn snake is infection since they eat rodents and other small creatures. So handling it with a field hook or golf club and sticking it in a soft cloth sack or pillow case when transporting it is recommended.

It's definitely a beauty. If I caught it, I'd keep it a bit.

another way to tell is if your cat was carrying it around and is still alive the next day, it's not poisonous

Baby Black Snake

You have a baby black snake. So, the person who guessed that won.
It's not a copperhead and it's not a trouser snake, even though they are common in the area.

BABY RAT SNAKE.

It's not a corn snake, although they are in the same family. They are both the same genus. Genus = ~ elaphe

By the way, your cat can play with it but the cat will probably kill it.

Cheers.
