Exclamation Did U Drop the injured raccoon at the Vet on Sat.?

Charles County Department of Health is seeking a good Samaritan who delivered an injured raccoon to the Southern Maryland Veterinary Clinic in Charles County on February 4, 2012. The raccoon died and was sent for rabies testing. The raccoon tested positive for rabies. If you are the individual who dropped it off or if you know that person, please contact the Charles County Department of Health immediately at 301-609-6752 during business hours or after hours 240-299-8597 to discuss possible exposure.

Rabies is a disease that attacks the nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. It is critical that an individual(s) who may have had an exposure, such as a bite, scratch or other contact to a rabid animal seek immediate medical attention.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER pick up, attempt to rescue an adult raccoon!!! NEVER!!
DNR does not allow rehabbers to rescue, rehab ADULT rabie vector species: raccoons, skunks, red and gray fox and bats. DNR ONLY allows the rescue of "young of the year" meaning babies!!. This includes deer!!

DNR has laws/rules on trapping and releasing wildlife.
Raccoons live in "gangs" and taking one out of your yard, dumping/releasing it down the road or in new territory is a death sentence..as the area you dumped it in is all ready claimed..and the dumped raccoon is usually killed by the local ones.

You must contact DNR or Animal Control if you want to go trapping wildlife, esp. now that it is spring, and many animals have had babies or are about to give birth. Many counties require you have a permit.

When in doubt...Leave it ALONE!!! There is only one of YOU..and hundreds of raccoons, foxes, skunks, bats.
OK??
Leave wildlife issues to the trained experts....and enjoy from a safe distance

Thank You.

So why was it taken to the Vet?

Next time: Call the police and let them have some target practice!!

Then bag and tag and test..IF indicated..
If not indicated....toss it in the burn chamber.
Once dead, the rabies virus dies, as it need a host with a body temp of 98 and above.

It seems like the level of stupidity in the general population is constantly increasing. The movie Idiocracy is coming true.

The staff at an animal hospital didn't immediately recognize the symptoms?

you would think that the staff at an animal hospital would have gotten the vacinne considering the likelyhood of coming into tertiary contact with rabid animals
