One Maryland Broadband residential service and you

So, seeing the fiber trucks rolling down the road near Cooks and the Green Door got me thinking. One of the trucks is labelled "One Maryland Boradband". Did some digging, and heres what I found.

1. Uses Federal stimulus funding along with matching state funds to build out fiber across the, initially to link in "anchors" like schools and libraries and other govt institutions onto a highspeed backbone.

2. According to what I read, the "last mile" meaning from the trunks to residences will be built out by private companies like Verizon with the private company leasing access to the trunks from the consortium, which should help defray the initial deployment costs.

3. From another thread on here discusssing Fios rollout, it was mentioned that Verizon would only offer phone and internet, but no TV due to franchise issues, meaning that Metroast has the sole rights to provide wired TV to homes in the county.

So, the questions are. when is that franchise time up? And can we expect there to be competition, or will the Commisioners just hand it back to MC?

The Metrocast franchise expires on 02/18/2018. As far as what the commissioners will do at that time depends, in part, on how much attention the renewal process gets from the public.

Well, doesnt matter now anyway. Got a call from the nice young man at the One Maryland Broadband Project. Seems that whole "last mile to residential users via commercial groups" sort of dropped off between 2010 and now. Now all this fiber they are laying is strictly government/public.

Seems like a bit of bait and switch to me, noy unlike a certain septic system fee we all know and love.

They'd have to upgrade in order to be worth buying.
