You are joking, right? So what if a teacher relaxes at home during the summer (8 weeks); she is on her own time as in not on the payroll. Teachers' annual salaries do not include pay for summer, winter, spring breaks, or any of the school days off except for teacher in service days. I am not complaining about that, but do want to clarify.

Every teacher I know takes at least one course during the summer, meets with colleagues to plan for the following year, works in the classroom to provide a welcoming place for her students, reads professional literature, and tries to take care of personal needs like doctors appointments so that she can be in school.

For those of you who think that teachers work an 8 hour day and not on Saturday and Sunday, think again. Next time you receive a response to your email from a teacher, look at the time it was sent. You may be amazed at the ungodly hour.

Also remember that she works in an environment where anyone can walk through the door and do the unthinkable.

That there is just an ignorant statement, so does anyone that isn't in a secure area.

Of course, many of us work in unsecured locations, but how many of us have co- workers who would look to us for protection?

As a longtime HS teacher and coach, I have always said that the best place to be either would be in an orphanage...

That was about the most polarized thread I've seen here, no middle ground either the OP is a crazed psycho stalker or the teacher is a lazy ass with no regard for her charges. I must say, it was quite impressive to read.

Not so, I think the teacher is abusing her leave but I also think the poster should mind her own buisness.

OP has a reasonable concern. The approach to addressing that concern is questionable. Expecting a detailed explanation of how someone else uses their leave is unreasonable.

All of the teachers I know are taking classes at night and on the weekends to get their Masters.... And summers...they're taking even more classes.

Depends on what the teacher is doing. My one friend who is a teacher is on several county committees, and gets pulled for meetings a day or two a week, for portions of the day...

So she knows, in advance, what days she will be out? Ok...it's probably a legitimate reason.

As some of you on here know, I started out as a substitute in St. Mary's County schools and am now a special education paraeducator (which is a fancy term for teachers aide) I am also a wife and mom, our sons are 13 and soon to be 16.

I've been a part of St. Mary's County schools now since March 2010. In that time I have learned quite a bit on the behind the scenes as far as what teachers have to deal with day in and day out. I myself have dealt with difficult children and I've heard horror stories about difficult parents (I won't go into detail here because of confidentiality reasons.)

My personal opinion? If I had an issue with a teacher, I'd go to the teacher first. If that didn't work, then go to the school principal. Only after that didn't work would I go to the Board. Apologizing in advance for sounding snotty, but coming on here and posting a thread blasting this teacher without really knowing what's going on is a bit of a b**ch move, IMO. I'm not sure where the OP got the info about the class being behind the others, but seriously if it's THAT much of a problem, march up to the school and see about having the child moved to a different class. The last day of the current marking period is next Friday so they MAY be willing to work with you (I've had to move my son to a different class partway through the school year, so I know it can be done) Don't sit here on a forum and complain, go up to the school and DO something about it.

Oh and something else before I step off my soapbox, St. Mary's County substitutes are now required to have completed at LEAST a two year degree (or two years of a 4 year program), undergo a criminal history background check, successfully complete the substitute training course, and commit to 10 substitute days a year.
In addition, it also helped that you and I are friends and when you sub'd for my kid and she acted up, all you had to do was say was, "I've got your Mom's number..."
