As odd as it may seem, lights can actually make an object harder to see.

Diffused lighting camouflage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have seen this myself. I was stopped while granting a car the right of way when I was making a right turn. I saw nothing behind the car and intended to go after he passed. After the car was clear, I turned my head to the right as I was about to go but something caught my eye. I looked back and after a second or so I could finally see one of those custom motorcycles with a huge headlight that was turned on. I could barely see the motorcycle. The light caused the motorcycle to mask into the background perfectly. Although he probably could have swerved to miss me if I had pulled out, it would have been close.

The motorcycle did look cool though.

I would think that studies would show that MOST accidents, in those situations, were caused mostly due to road conditions than being able to see the other person. I guess I am biased as I have really good vision.
Just never understood the reasoning behind it.
Some gov't liberal probably decided that it would be a good idea since they MUST protect the entire country from itself......for a fee, of course.

Too much light can blind anyone. Like people using their fog lights when there is no fog. Most of them are out of adjustment but their owners don't know it.

I've been riding motorcycles for 38 years but I won't ride with my high beam on as some bikers suggest. It's not necessary and it's irritating to drivers in front of you and, if you can't see a car or motorcycle in the daytime, please don't drive.

I like knowing everyone sees me.

I like others have daytime running lights (DRL), they come on with the ignition after dusk (light senor on dash), or they come on when the vehicle is placed in gear. However I had to disable my DRL when I installed high intensity discharge (HID) bulbs. The DRL's run the headlights at 75% power which would damage the ballast for the HID, it also runs the running/parking lights depending on what you want to call them. So now when in gear the running lights are always on, and the headlights are off until I turn them on with the switch.

The opposite side of that coin is, those lights can be turned off.
Shoot, even driving in sunny weather with headlights on is a better idea these days, because some cars are difficult to see on the highway when it's nice outside.
To turn the DRL's off on the Jetta you have to engage the parking brake. That is the only way and a real PITA when coming on base at night. I pull it up one notch and the car starts dinging. It is the same on a lot of cars.

That cop lied, most cars today have HID's from the factory. The problem is people who throw them in the stock headlight housings and do not aim them properly, that is illegal. I spent the extra money and bought the projector housings for HID's. Also the color is selected by the purchaser, I went with 6000K which is diamond white, ice white etc depending on manufacturer. 10000k and above should be illegal. The higher the number the bluer the lights.

Seriously?
You don't understand why it's a good idea to have the headlights on when there's both rain and road slop in the air, people's windows are fogging up and not everybody has windshield wipers in good shape?

No they don't.

He didn't lie. Blue lights are only to be used by the Police in Charles County. I know cops who have pulled people over for them and for those blue neon lights that people used to install under their cars.

APS HID's are standard on a lot of luxury cars, others can have them added on as a factory option. Most manufacturers use a kelvin rating of around 3500-4500k which is yellow to clean white in color. BMW has had them since the 90's. The Jetta had the option to upgrade but was expensive at the time and its an 06.

Italian what I may have thought you said HID/Xenons are illegal. I realize you said blue lights which would be the 10000k and above range.

They are HID (High Intensity Discharge) lights.

The same lights that come in many, many mid-high end cars.

Until I find someone who is willing to pay if I hit a deer I can't see, I'll continue to use them. No halogen bulb will ever be as bright as those.

EDIT:: Blazin beat me to it
