| I have a question about veganism (or whatever you say): I've been fooling around with some vegan/vegetarian recipes and....you can make some pretty yummy stuff and feed yourself well. My question is, why do they make tofurkey and other tofu or TVP stuff to mimic meat? None of it tastes good and it's not even remotely a decent substitute for the real thing. Why not just eat food in its natural state? For example, I do not like organ meats. I also don't like green peppers and a few other things. Therefore, I do not eat them. I don't fix something up to imitate liver or jello with cottage cheese - I simply eat other things that I do like. Why do so many vegetarians and vegans eat doctored foods that mimic something else, when there are a million other things they could eat?

But to question one, tofu is a source of protein, protein is an essential building block for the human body. Tofu is like a blank canvas, in the "raw" it probably tastes like canvas. So by preparing it different ways you can change the texture and flavor to make it more appealing. I like the tofu strips in hot and sour soup. But I'm going to eat meat, real turkey, before I eat tofurkey

| I love tofu. I like to mash it down so it's dense, then cube it up and toss it with a little cornstarch before frying. Could eat those little nuggets of love all day. I also like it in soups, like chicken or hot and sour. What I'm definitely not going to do is eat some bogus tofu "hotdog".

So in the beginning of switching my food to sans meat, people who meant well, tried to encourage me to eat the faux meat. I said no, it's only going to make me sad. Which it would have. As everyone else has said, tofu takes on the taste of whatever you cook it with. So I'd buy tofu and make my own meals. However, do you know what I crave above all things? A freaking corn dog. I want a corn dog so bad that I was planning to eat one and then driving myself to the ER. Then my husband found - a vegan corn dog. Did I buy it? H-e-double-hockey-stick to the yes. After all, it's not so much about the dog but the cornmeal batter yumminess. So the reason for faux meat is to give you a taste of something you miss.
