Eye Exam

My drivers license is up for renewal and I have to get a paper signed by an eye doctor to renew by mail. I have an appointment today at Doctors On Sight. I was talking to my boss who also needs an eye exam and had gone to the clinic on base. They referred him to Target.

I picked Doctors On Sight because I have VSP coverage but I also have Tricare Prime - just like my boss.

Does anyone actually know which place is less expensive? Thanks!

depends on what your insurance coverage is, but if they are comparible, the glasses will be cheaper at Target.

I will not go back to Doctors on Sight. They had terrible service when I went there last and were expensive too!

How can you renew by mail? I just got mine and it said to come in person and take the test or have it done by a specialist and bring it in.

I have NO idea but the first sentence in Step Five says mail your completed license renewal application and vision certification, along with your payment to MVA in the envelope provided.

BUT

Step two says determine if your are eligible to renew mail and there are a bunch of questions and you have to answer No to all of them to be eligible. One of them is Have you been diagnosed with a physical or mental disability other than vision which may affect your driving?

I know people, that know people, that claim to know you and they say that sometimes you're mental. (To be honest I think it's meant as a compliment).

Could that be it maybe? :)

We LOVE Dr. Heavner at Target Optical. Love love love him. Is he not a choice with your insurance?

Huh. Mine just says apply in person once every 5 years. No application included.

I would imagine that he is - the base told my boss that a lot of people on base use Target. I just didn't think about it when I made my appointment because I forgot that Tricare Prime covered eye exams. According to what my company is telling me Bayshore and Doctors on Sight are the only places around here that accept VSP (my company coverage).

The Bayshore chicks were kinda rude when I called so I called Doctors on Sight instead.

I've since called Doctors on Sight and they accept Tricare Prime which means I can maybe get my exam as a better price than VSP and VSP can cover a small portion of the glasses since Tricare Prime doesn't.

They do have a bunch of stuff listed in Step Three about binocular vision, visual acuity of 20/40 continual field of vision of at least 140 and Persons with visual acuity levels less than 20/70 but no worse than 20/100 are NOT elegible to Renew their MD driver license by mail and require special handling by the MVA Glen Burnie.

I may fall into that category - my eyes are blurry at the end of the day.

Are you a veteran? I was reading something under the TriCare thingy that veterans who are still eligible for medical benefits can receive one free pair of prescription glasses per year - and some of them are NOT birth control frames.

Target doesn't accept VSP. You have to pay up front and get reimbursed from VSP. It doesn't take long after you submit a claim -- maybe a week.
