Fellow Geeks, Nerds, Dorks, and Losers...

Anyone else play D20 RPGs?

DM moved away, and now my Saturdays have gotten pretty boring...

This makes me feel a lot better - I always thought I *was* a geek, but apparently I don't even speak the *language*!

Okay, I'll ask - what is D20? Is RPG role playing game?

I know that RPG is Role Playing Game.

D20 I know means two things both referring to two different kinds of RPG. D20 means a 20 sided die, where the polar opposites of the piece always add up to 21. It is also modern RPG engine. I'm not totally sure, but I'd be willing to bet the game engine is named after the die.

Oh god. It's true. We really are a dying breed....

Yes, D20 refers to the die-rolling system used to play book based role playing games (like Dungeons & Dragons, Palladium, WhiteWolf, et.cetera). It's where the abilities of the character are determined throughout the game by rolling a series of die (ranging from 4 sided to 20 sided). You've probably heard of this...it's where a bunch of goobers sit around a kitchen table with books, pencils, and dice arguing over whether Gallstaff the sorcerer of light had gray eyes or blue ones while the fat kid in the group yells "Where's the Mountain Dew???" (if anyone gets that joke I owe you a beer).

If you take D20 a few steps further and program it into video games, you're looking at the big MMORPGs (like EverQuest, WarCraft, StarCraft)....it's even the basis of games like Final Fantasy and The Sims.

*sigh*, so I take it from the posted replies that there aren't any other nerds in all of Southern Maryland.

How sad.

Okay I know what you are talking about now. My DH plays that with some old college buddies every so often via the internet. I don't know if the die is 20 sided but the rest of it sounds familiar. They use something called Teamspeak so they can talk via the net and send out maps created in some JASC graphic program.

It would not bother me so much except DH is almost computer illiterate and I have to setup everything and then periodically I hear my name being shouting from the back room to fix some problem.

I thought it was Darling Husband.

However, in my mind it always defaults to d!ckhead... It's almost the same thing as using b!tches as a term of endearment...
