I love my kid's bus driver

But she is no longer allowed to take a day off for any reason.

The school has sent home several notes this year reminding parents to make sure the kids are at the stop on time. No waiting on porches, just inside the door, but at the stop, visable to the driver. Drivers are not supposed to honk horns, wait or double back for children. Our driver routinely honks, waits and because our neighborhood is really only one street, she has to double back to get out.

My kids have been late to the stop ONE time. I try to be very conscience of getting them out there on time, so I'm not taking advantage of the driver's inclination to break the rules for the sake of the kids. Even in the rain, when I let them stay on the porch, I see the bus far enough away to get them to the end of the driveway, even before the bus starts slowing down for them.

This morning there was a substitute, he was early. The kids were putting on their jackets as the bus blew by without slowing down for us, the house next to us OR the one after that. He had to double back and he did stop for all the kids on the way out, but by then he'd missed so many, he was running 10 minutes early and he still had half the run to make.

I called the school to warn them that all these kids were going to miss the bus and they called the driver and sent him back. I don't see the point in sending him back, since everyone who missed the bus already would have gone back inside or were already in a car on their way. By the time he left here the second time, he was running about 5 minutes late.

I love the bus driver, I love the bus driver, I love the bus driver, I love the bus driver.

Is the no waiting a new rule, because we invariably are running to catch the bus as he pulls away and I often catch the bus on his way out of the neighborhood (not at our stop)

If it is St. Mary's County Public School's bus don't bother calling the transporation department and complaining because they don't care. I had an issue this year with a sub driver and called the transporation office and was told someone would call back and they never did and after I called again and left a message I finally got a return call and was told the sub was the owner of the bus.

I already said I called the school, (not to complain, my kids were on the bus.) but to warn them, a few minutes is one thing, but by the time they left the neighborhood they were a full 10 minutes early and that was going to mean a lot of kids, maybe 20 or more were going to miss the bus. The school sent the bus back.

Why would I call the transportation department? They aren't even open that time of day. If I feel the need to complain, it would be to the owner of the bus, the person responsible for hiring the sub. That happens to be the regular driver.

Not a new rule, an old one that they are having trouble enforcing. Common courtesy dictates the driver stop if they see you running for it. OTOH, it would be courteous on your part to try and be on time too.
