SMECO is experiencing power outages in southern Calvert County. Approximately 20,000 customers were affected earlier today by a fault on the submarine transmission line that crosses the Patuxent River at the Thomas Johnson bridge. The fault occurred on the St. Mary’s County side of the Patuxent River near Solomons.

As of 5:30 p.m., about 3,000 customers were still without power.

SMECO expects to restore power to all customers by this evening by re-routingpower using a transmission line located in the central part of the county near Prince Frederick.

Additional outages occurred at the Mutual and St. Leonard substations. Those customers are being restored. Customers who have power are asked to conserve energy to assist in the restoration process. When power lines are energized, restoration has to occur in sections to prevent overloading the power line and substation.

Calvert County emergency management has opened a “warming center” at Calvert High School for residents without power. Residents may call 410-535-3014 for more information.

Further information will be made available as repairs are made and customers are restored.

Ha ha ha. I never lost power, and my gas fireplace has been pumping out enough heat to have the thermostat sit at about 74 degrees all day long. It's been wonderful.

Our power was out for 9 hours and we never dipped below 65* - with only one (we have 2) kerosene heater going in the basement most of the day.

Thank goodness for them! I saw a bunch of people filling up kerosene containers at the Sheets on Rte 235 yesterday.

Otter was just asking for your phone # earlier to see if you guys were OK.

Yeah, saw it. How did the Giants do? Oh that's right they're sitting at home with the same record as the Skins.

Yeah, we're adopting the same motto as the 'Skins:

"Well, there's always next year!"
