Really? That's interesting. I have DSL and consistently get the 1.5Mb/s its rated at. I have for the last 2 years- both when my old roommates had Earthlink and with the Verizon service I have now. On another note, IIRC, Verizon owns all the DSL lines in St. Mary's- don't know about the rest of So. MD.

My parents have cable. When I use the web to look things up while I'm visiting or working on the car, I notice they have A LOT more lag, especially on browser start-up. For some reason, they have a much faster brute speed than I do though. I've never heard them complain about reliability either.

I much prefer DSL, however that was in philly, down here I cant get DSL in our new house so im stuck wih cable. I think DSL is a bit slower but consistant, cable slows depending on the community your plugged into, someone correct me if im wrong... but i guess it dont matter, im stuck with cable!

I know others in the area are problem-free with their DSL. Mine was spotless for a long time, until February of this year. It seems to be a network congestion issue, based on the behavior I'm seeing. Too much traffic in the area. I'm currently in an apartment complex, so maybe there are too many subscribers trying to surf in the evening...

I've called verizon repeatedly on this issue, but the fixes they make are only temporary - they generally move my connection to a different router, which works for a few days, then it is back to slow slow slow.

I'll be headed to GMP in a month anyway, when I move. No DSL at the new homestead.

Thanks for the info. I was leaning toward DSL because it's cheaper and they're giving free wireless modems at the moment. I know with cable I have to buy/rent a modem; would I have to do the same with DSL or does it just plug into the back of my PC?

Just plugs in...and the setup instructions are almost too simple.

It hasn't happened as far as I remember in the last month but GMP's cable internet went down a lot last year.
