"P.G. County" or, "Prince Georges County"?

I haven't added much since the last newsletter, but there are some additions worthy of mention.

Has anyone been following the recent controversy regarding the use of "P.G. County" vs. "Prince Georges County"? Apparently it came to light recently via a recent broadcast of a TV show, "Commander in Chief". One particular episode focused on the county and there were a number of people who felt it cast the county in a negative light. Critics of the episode also went on to point out that there were numerous references to, "P.G. County", which they felt was demeaning. There was also an article about this in today's Metro section of the Washington Post. Well, growing up in Marlow Heights, I recall an equal number of people referring to the county as both, "P.G. County", as well as, "Prince Georges County", and don't remember, "P.G. County", being a derisive term. If their was anything remotely offensive at all, it was perhaps the occasional reference to the county as the "poor cousin" to Montgomery and Fairfax counties. What's your take on this?

A former long-time Deer Park Heights (those duplexes off of Raleigh Road, between Olson Street and St. Barnabas Road) neighbor and friend, William "Bud" Snead, passed away last week. Mr. Snead and his family (whose children we grew up with) were great neighbors and friends, and he'll be greatly missed.

The 30-year reunion for the Potomac High School Class of 1976 will be September 16, 2006, at the Radisson Old Town.

Also, Holy Family Class of 1976 will soon be celebrating their 30-year reunion.

The Antietam Gallery, who previously put out a limited edition print of the old Mighty Mo drive-in, will soon be unveiling another limited edition print, this one of the old Wheaton Hot Shoppes. In commemoration, there will be a big get together on June 24, featuring muscle cars and hot rods, as well as Mighty Mo's (one and the same as the Royal Burger from Jr. Hot Shoppes), fries, onion rings, and Orange Freezes. Not only do I plan to attend (and possibly help out in the chow line), but I will be in full Grit regalia.

The very popular Guest Book now has 160 entries.

Keep the memories alive,

Saw that episode. Actually what struck me is that the TV writers seemed to have just discovered Maryland. Why they made it look like Hyattsville is some kind of crime hellhole in the midst of the idyllic surroundings of Takoma Park, Langley Park, Adelphi, Riverdale, Landover, Seat Pleasant. Largo, Capitol Heights, Suitland, Temple Hills - etc. I mean, c'mon. PG County isn't some wonderful little suburban dream with a few hotspots. The crime starts right around downtown DC and keeps going in about a ten mile radius. It amzes me they didn't even mention Anacostia - which is IN the District.

Plus it was obvious that the President in that episode was doing exactly what she denied she was doing - make a big public spectacle about a local problem that wasn't any of her business because it affected a member of her staff and because it was politically expedient. Sending in federal marshals over the objections of the Maryland governor was absurd.

What I think REALLY sinks the show is what Trek fans used to call the "reset button" - at the end of every episode, everything is just fine because they came up with this really neat solution that works fabulously and everyone likes it - except for the bad guys, who are easy to spot.

It's being cancelled, to no surprise.

On our way to D.C. this weekend... sis and I took a detour to Forrestville to see the old apartment complex of our childhood memories. We spent 2 years in an apartment across the street from Penn Mar shopping center back in the mid 70s... talk about flashbacks...

I didn't know there was a controversy.

I just call it "that ####hole up north" and everyone seems to know what I'm talking about.

That's understandable. Saying there were 4 shootings and another child killed by a hit and run driver in P.G. County does sound a little negative.

Some places just beg for name degradation. P.G. County got off easy, I think (not that I'd heard about the "controversy" you speak of, yet another tempest in a teapot). Montgomery County has been "Monkey County" for a lot of folks for many years, mainly since its rapid growth began in the '70s. There are other places in the state with similarly derisive titles, though they escape me at the moment.

People who are really hurt by "P.G." instead of "Prince George's" must have some real issues with insecurity.
