Marlow Heights 60s and 70s Newsletter 053006

As we start the Summer of 2006 on this Memorial Day, let's remember all the servicemen and women that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy on a daily basis. As a 20-year veteran of the military, I can really appreciate these lyrics from an old song, "All Gave Some, But Some Gave All".

A friend of the site, parents of an old Sandymount/Stoddert/Potomac classmate, put me in touch with my old 5th Grade teacher at Sandymount Elementary, Ms. Doyle. I followed that up by calling Ms. Doyle one day not long ago, and we had a very, very nice conversation. Believe it or not, she said she actually remembered me--this was 37, 38 years ago (the 1968/1969 school year)! Lots of great memories came up, and I was also glad to hear that Ms. Doyle is doing well and still lives in the area.

Remember "Daks", those shark-skin like trousers that were the "dress up" slacks for Grits? Apparently Grits/Blocks had some expensive tastes in this regard, since Daks were an old line brand originally made in London. Also have a images of tube socks that we Grits wore (and are still made!), as well as Grit dress socks. I've recently come across some "silky dress socks" that look a lot like the ones that we used to wear. These were a sheer material, with vertical stripes sewn in that were typically blue, green, red, etc. Can't remember what we wore them with, since they weren't a good match for Chucks and Macs.

Have a link to updates to Potomac High School. Those of you, like me, that attended or graduated from Potomac back in the day, check it out. Also, remember that the Class of 76 is celebrating its 30-year reunion this September 16 at the Radisson Old Town Alexandria, 6PM - 11PM. If you haven't registered, go to www.ReunionCelebrations.com, or call 813-874-9967.

Remember some of the apartment complexes in the area? Prior to moving to Deer Park Heights, my family and I lived in the Dennis Grove apartments off of St. Barnabas Road. Those apartments are still there, but called Oxon Hill Village. They've also renamed the old Marlow Overlook apartments, which has occurred at least twice now, and currently known as Princeton Estates. Both places have significant problems, and are certainly nothing like I remember them. Go to the links for each one and you can read reviews from an apartment rating guide site from residents past and present. I've also included images of the Marlow Plaza and Marlow Heights apartments.

Also remember the Antietam Gallery is having its annual get together June 24th in Sharpsburg, Maryland. Besides unveiling a new print of the old Wheaton Hot Shoppes, there will be Mighty Mo's (known as Royal Burgers at the Jr. Hot Shoppes), fries, onion rings, and Orange Freezes for sale. Also, yours truly will come in full Grit dress.

The very popular Guest Book now has 163 entries, so please encourage your friends and family to sign it if they haven't already. This is a great place to not only try to look up old friends and classmates, but the personal recollections and memories are priceless.

Keep the memories alive,
