| I am way more annoyed by men who don't give up their seats for women and the elderly. ![]() I sat at the gate at National and watched in awe as healthy, young men sat there eating their bagels and reading their newspapers while women holding children and old people lugging their carry on stood up waiting. Not acceptable. |

..Why should men give up their seats to women? We fought for equal rights. I can see giving up a seat to the elderly if they look frail. I think next time I am somewhere, I'll give up my seat to a male ![]()

| It's actually not even an issue as far as a age or gender. I've given up my seat to both before. I guess the point is, to be courteous, a healthy, able person should give up their seat to someone less able and by that I mean someone frail or someone encumbered by heavy bags and/or children. I'd give up my seat to a man holding a child but that may be because I know what it's like holding a sleeping child and carrying a bag. |

![]() I know several younger people who have pins and plates holding body parts together but you cannot tell, by looking at them, that they have these things. Arthritis hurts and is not always visible. I know some elderly that are very healthy. You get there first, you get a seat. IMO

True story happened a few months ago: An older woman walked onto the DC metro green line train. Two male teenagers were sitting in the "elderly and handicapped" seats, being overly loud and obnoxious. The woman politely asked if she could sit there. The guys said no and laughed rudely. Another passenger on the train (not mentioning names) was standing nearby, overheard the conversation, and kicked the teens bookbags off the metro. The boys ran off the train to get their bookbags, the doors closed, the woman sat down, and the passenger who kicked the bookbags off the train received a round of applause.
