Exclamation One lane through Hughesville all summer?

I got this via a forwarded email. Can this possibly be true?! One lane in Hughesville, even for that short hop is bound to cause some serious delays. Anybody know if this is true?

"Hughesville traffic closing to two lanes

Friday, June 9, 2006

Maryland State Highway Administration crews began the process Thursday of shifting traffic in Hughesville to the two southbound lanes of Route 5.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane each way between Gallant Green Road and the All American Harley-Davidson dealership. SHA officials said that the new traffic pattern would be in place through the end of the summer and urged travelers to plan accordingly.

‘‘Clearly, when we take two lanes down to one, there is going to be some delay,” said David Buck, spokesman for SHA.

The shift, Buck said, will allow crews to begin construction of the northbound lane tie-ins for the new Hughesville bypass.

Variable message signs, cones and barrels will be in place to guide motorists through the work zone, Buck said.

If this is true...

Why spend money to downsize?

Whew. I'll try it but it may be quicker to get from the Beltway to Leonardtown via LaPlata instead of down Rt. 5! Don't you think using the shoulder as a lane as least during rush hour might be a better idea than one lane? Look at bad it backs up with two lanes open!

It's not really that long of a stretch between Gallant Green Rd and the Harley place.

Coming from the beltway you can bypass that stretch by using 4 or 5 to 301 to 381 (Brandywine Road) to 231 to 5 at Hughesville or take 5 to Olivers Shop to 234. I use both ways to avoid Hughesville even when all lanes are open.

Don't send anymore traffic through 381.
