my average speed for a 20 mile ride would be around 18-19 mph but thats on a road bike (ten speed type) on my mountain bike on the road i average about 15. Most kids dont work that hard so i would guess 10 or so on average.
I want to say my downhill max was around 45, heading down the hill to the warf in leonardtown.

And you were probably going please car don't pull out in front of me!!

I go a lot slower down the hills than I used to since I lost weight. Not as much gravity I guess.

Just recently, I was able to average 16 mph. Pretty good for me, since I just started riding at the end of August

Here's a few typical speeds:
Me on my big heavy Schwinn: 8 - 12 mph
Me on my touring bike: 10 - 15 mph
Riders on an ordinary club road ride: 15 - 20 mph
Riders race-training in a paceline: up to 45 mph

I suppose a tough little kid on a super-cheap Walmart or Kmart POS could do about 7 - 10 mph.
