attn: Turkey Fryers

Hi,

I'm looking for turkey fryers in the Northern half of Calvert County.

If you're frying your turkey this year and need to dispose of the oil afterwards, please get in touch with me instead of dumping it down the drain or somewhere else. I'll come take it off your hands if you can put it in a reasonable container.

I've converted my car to run on vegetable oil and would happily help you dispose of old oil (even if it's rancid).

No need to strain or anything!

If you're interested you can PM me or shoot an email to:

esteschris@hotmail.com

Thanks!!!

How hard was the conversion? Are there instructions on doing this, and does the oil have to be filtered, etc. Drove behind a Mercedes in Germany that was running cooking oil, smelled bad.
I have 98 Mercedes Diesel.

Currently, save the oil and pour in recycle drumps at transfer stations, don't know who gets it.

Yeah I am curious. What model Mercedes and how many miles on yours ? I have an 85 300TD wagon with 205K and a 300D with 178K on it. Both are like riding in a tank. But fun to drive too. Nothing like spooling up the turbo at 70 MPH and having plenty of "go" left.

On MythBusters they used a Mercedes Diesel and didn't do any kind of Conversion, just filled an external tank with Oil and off they went.. They ran it with one gallon of diesel, then filled the same external tank with one gallon of Used cooking oil.. I think they got 2 or 3 MPG less on the cooking oil, but it started right up, and ran like a champ.

The conversion was a bit of work... I used a GreaseCar kit (www.greasecar.com) and was really pleased at how complete it was. I spent two very long days in the driveway installing everything and it worked with no problems. I've got about 5,000 miles on vegetable oil and love it! I was putting around $300/month in my truck when gas was expensive this summer.

There's a ton of info on the internet; search for WVO or SVO with diesel on Google and you'll find more than you care to read.

The oil does have to be filtered. I usually get mine from a couple of Chinese restaurants. I built a filtration/storage system with two 30 gallon drums, a whole-house water filter, and a 1/2 horsepower water pump. My initial attempts at collecting and cleaning oil were messy and frustrating, but now with all the infrastructure in place, it's not much more trouble than going to the gas station.

I also built a vacuum tank to collect the oil, which is the only way to go. I have a 12 gallon compressor tank with a 10 foot hose on it. I pump all the air out of it, drop the hose in the oil, and open the valve -- takes about 2 minutes to fill the tank!

As for the smell, my exhaust smells like fried chicken... beats diesel smoke any day!!!

Mine's an '83 300D sedan with the turbo diesel. It's got 165K on it right now.

You '85s are ideal candidates for conversion.

Mine has a real sweet spot between 60 and 85 mph!
