You can go up to the Veteran's Home anytime to make donations. When my dad was there I'd notice who was pretty much "left alone" - no visitors, no family, and I started to bring them things and spend a few minutes with them. The greatest gift you can give them is to just be there and help - even for a few minutes. The staff turnover causes shortages, and those patients without a family advocate often get overlooked.

Now that dad has passed I go up once a week and spend time on his old hallway. They always need toiletries and they like food (check with the nurse for what they can and can't have). The man my father first shared a room with hadn't had a visitor in 3 years. The man next door had NEVER had family visit - he'd been there 7 years.

This is an honest question...

The veterans home cannot provide those basic items?

It depends on what section the patient is in. Those that have toiletries provided get only the most basic, generic type - so any preferred items must be brought in from the outside. Those that live over in assisted living have to handle such things as toiletries on their own.
