Give it 25 years and there will be more. Reputations of films can change so much. For example, today, it's hard to believe Citizen Kane lost the Academy Award for Best Picture to How Green Was My Valley.

00 films I wouldn't be surprised to see on the list eventually: The Aviator, Brokeback Mountain, Crash, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Departed, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Gangs of New York, Gladiator, Little Miss Sunshine, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Lost in Translation, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Memento, Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River, The Pianist, The Queen, Requiem for a Dream, Sideways, and Traffic all come to mind. All widely accepted as modern classics which will find their place on best-of-all-time lists eventually.

Best movie lists are purely subjective although I do agree with the majority of them on that list and have seen most of them. But I didn't care much for "Titanic" although a lot of people absolutely LOVED it.

They probably couldn't ignore it becasue it is the largest grossing film to date.

True but I've found just because a movie is "popular" doesn't mean it's a GREAT flick. Hence the success of ones like Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell movies. Great for a few hours of mind-numbing entertainment but very little redeeming cinematic qualities.

Might also be politics as well. Didn't James Cameron direct Titanic?

Notable film figures might think "how dare AFI not include that film".

I'm sure politics does play some part in it as it does in most things anymore. I personally don't give a rat's ass about that aspect of it.

I'm sure there are quite a few people that were miffed because they didn't include a film they thought was the best of all time. When you limit it to 100 out of all the thousands of films that have been made over the years, more than a few "on the edge" didn't make the final cut.
