There is this despondancy to it; not that the German is being evil or vicious, just saying, 'Hey, you're a soldier and I am a solider and we have to kill each other. We just do, so, please, you lost and let's do this as gently as possibly. I mean no harm, but I must do this. I am sorry. Please die in peace."

I always said that since I am such a wussy if I were forced to go fight in a war I would hide or pretend I was already dead........until I saw this movie. It is probably one of the best movies ever made but I can not bring myself to watch it again because of that scene, it has affected me terribly

...that part is horrible, to. He's not a coward. He goes on to kill the German. He's just this REMF guy thrown into a cauldron he can't comprehend and is ####ting his pants. He is a perfect metaphor for those all bent out of shape over torture.

His ideas of fair play and justice lead to an enemy walking away when killing him was the obvious right thing to do.

It comes back to bite him in the ass and costs the life of a comrade; his tender sensibilities get paid for by someone else.

He comes to his senses and kills the German in cold blood as should have been the first time around.

So, not coward. He learns the lesson every soldier in history learned. Ideally, he goes on to say;

"War is cruelty. There's no use trying to reform it, the crueler it is the
sooner it will be over."

Next time, he kills his enemy before his enemy kills him. Which is the whole point.

...as a citizen. Think about what we ask our young men to do when we send them to fight. When we are prepared to destroy our enemy, viciously, completely, it does two things; helps us win and prevents needing to fight in the first place.

When we are unprepared to accept the violence of war, we invite it.

That is the cruel catch 22 of man kind and our history.

...it. If someone else was there who wasn't freezing up they would have killed the German and put a foot in his azz and said 'now do you understand? Let's go."

Combat history is replete with 'cowards' who overcame their fears and went on to be as good a fighter as anyone after costing a comrade their life.
