I liked it. It is definitely violent, though. They set it up well for Silent Hill 2, also.

Thumbs up

Silent Hill is a decent horror film. One element above all others is the reason it's a success: the atmopshere. This film is drenched in foreboding, unnerving creepiness. Every sound and every disturbing image contributes to the terror and, by the end, you'll truly be affected by this glimpse into a fictional, but terrifying demonic realm. Also good is Radha Mitchell's lead performance. She's competent and sells her character's emotions well.

What flaws there are are found in the screenplay, which has a strong set-up, but tends to become convoluted, especially near the end. I haven't played the game and was honestly confused by parts of the film, which was disappointing.

Still, as a horror fan, I was satisfied by this film and was even a bit creeped out leaving the theatre. Recommended.

This hits DVD shelves this Tuesday. Horror fans should rent it (or put it on their online rental queue). It's definitely a creepy ride.

I did not understand the ending when the mom and daughter drove home. They go into the house and see husband sleeping on couch and then they proceed to go upstairs. Hubby wakes up, senses something and runs to the door and looks outside. You do not see the jeep.

Was it the spirits of the mom and daughter, that they did not survive?

I could be wrong, but here's what I thought the ending meant...

***Silent Hill SPOILERS***

After their SUV crashed, the mother and daughter entered an alternate realm (horror movie logic applies, of course). Notice their 'vision' of Silent Hill was covered with ash and filled with mist, whereas the husband saw it as a normal, if isolated, town. After the big showdown at the church, they were allowed to leave the town limits, but didn't leave the supernatural alt. realm they were in. So, in the end, the mother/daughter and husband were in the same house, but in alternate dimensions.

If you say so.. We watched it tonight and it became quite irritating that it wasn't at least a LITTLE bit explained... A simple newspaper lying next to the dad, spread open to an article describing the wife and daughter's disappearance "x" amount of months ago after a crash in Silent Hill (or whatever) would've given at least a little more direction, if indeed that IS the direction... I went surfing on IMDB's chat boards and their ideas were goofy at best, really... It seems it has yet to be fully explained.

I give it an "Okay" and a "That SUCKED!" bellowed from the other end of the couch, causing two sets of dog ears to perk in inquiry! BTW, the girls (the dawgies) liked the air raids and sang to the first set of sirens!

The ending makes a little more sense if you played the series of games. But the alt demension is a decent explanation.
I also think the movie is alot less scary if you are a fan of the games, because the movie was just like watching someone play the game. I think they did the best they could with a Silent Hill movie, but it just lost something going from the game to the big screen.

I watched it. I thought the mother and daughter were dead.
I came to the conclusion that they died in the crash and had been ghosts for the whole movie. Same with the cop.

When I saw it with my buddy, he gave the following review at another site:

Quote:
We marched in to the theater with low expectations waiting to be proven wrong. Boy were we, this film is GREAT! It will keep you guessing all the way to the end, through the end, into the next day, probably as long as you care to think about it.

But it's not the thought provoking plotline that makes this exorsist/blair witch/zombie/burning town/coal fire/lost child/rated R without boobs cocktail so great, it's the great comic timing! 90 minutes into the film the dialog changes from random spewings of "my daughter is missing" and "Rosa!!" are replaced with a prefectly placed statement of the obvious "This place is ####ed up!"

Enough of my rambling... I don't recommend seeing this movie! It might work as a drinking game... you could take a shot whenever they spoke and probably still be good to drive home.

If anyone happens to see the movie and has a guess as to what it is about let me know.
My buddy was right about the dialogue. It was awful. But I still sort of liked the movie.
So your idea of an alternate universe was sort of what we came up with, except our alternate universe was a spooky ghosty afterlife.

I've played the games...and thought that though they did a good job getting the movie to be like the game.....the movie itself.....sucked. Did not scare me at all.....only thing that gave me the heebie jeebies were the bugs....other then that.....I almost fell asleep.
