1.) Brandon Routh (the new Superman actor) signifcantly tones down the dweebiness of Clark Kent, though it is still present a small bit. Routh's depiction of Kent is more respectful, serious, and shy than dweeby. There are just a few moments where he's the klutzy nerd Kent of the '70s/'80s films is seen.

2.) I'm afraid I've never seen "Smallville." I've always wanted to get the season DVD's from Netflix as I love the Superman comics and movies, but haven't yet. Those themes you mentioned, however, do play into Superman Returns -- being a human with relationships versus a super-powered alien is one of the things the character faces here. Another theme is how he comes to terms with being the last of his kind (though a twist shakes this up, but I would never reveal it).

Smallville connection...not really. Beginning of the movie, Kal-El's return is on the farm where he grew up as a boy and he is found/greeted by Martha Kent (Eva Marie-Saint) after the crash of his meteorite/vessel. That's about as far as it goes.

Movie was great and will be the summer blockbuster - a must see movie!!! Interesting to see the Daily Planet building placed right in the middle of Manhatten (oops...I mean Metropolis...). Suprise cameo of Marlon Brando as Jar-El (archive footage from the previous Superman movie).

Oh yeah.....anyone else catch the theater worker (Pax River) up front at the beginning of the movie with the night vision scope looking for camcorders???


Also had to chuckle...line started outside the theater early and when they opened the doors at 1:00, it was "sold out" by 1:05. About 1:30 a couple women came in and tried to brow-beat the manager about not being able to get in...they were indignant that THEY arrived at 1:15 and were appalled that THEY couldn't get in. The box office should not have opened until the advertised time of 1:00 and it was IMPOSSIBLE for them to be filled so quickly unless they opened early...yada, yada, yada...

Manager kept her cool and informed the "ladies" that the line started around noon or earlier and that in fact, they didn't open the doors until 1:00 and that they reached their capacity with everyone that had gotten in line. Guess the ladies wanted the Hollywood red carpet treatment and to be escorted in....

It's not that the hair color makes him bond, it's a part of the whole. Batman in a multi-colored outfit on the tv show was off, it still makes my eyes hurt. It's just an archetype. You expect a dark haired bond with a good british accent. Just one of those things that throws it off a little. Kinda like Ice cube as XXX..

I saw this again yesterday afternoon -- just a great, great action-adventure movie. It's my second favorite superhero movie behind Batman Begins from last year.

Guess he doesn't realize the expression, used by Perry White, the editor of the Daily Planet, was "Great Caesar's Ghost!" Maybe he is too young...

I give the movie a B, because it had too many references to the first film, even borrowing a couple of lines. Also, the surprise ending was little too easy to guess.

But there were plenty of high points:

• Kevin Spacey as Luthor. Hackman always came across as a failed game-show host, hardly a match for Superman. Spacey gave Luthor a menacing side as well as a funny side.
• Clark/Supes and Lois had the depth they had in the second movie. They acted like real people would after such a long time apart. I could feel Clark's sadness at seeing Lois with another guy and knowing that he had chosen to let her go five years before.
• Lois' fiance Richard was a likable person, which was a daring move. The easy way out would have been to make him an arrogant dork, an obvious way to get the audience rooting for Clark. That trick was already old in the '40s when romantic comedies like "His Girl Friday" used it.
• The sequences of Superman's saves ran a little long, but were incredibly mind-blowing. The space shuttle sequence was obviously inspired by John Byrne's "Man of Steel" comic miniseries.
• The movie had little of the cheesiness of the original series, which seemed to be shot on the cheap with little thought to design. I've read that the first movie was shot by three different directors, and that inconsistency showed.
