The Matador

The Matador is an action-comedy film starring Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear. I ordered it from Netflix because it received stellar reviews and was nominated for a handful of high-profile awards. I watched it earlier today and thought it was a great movie!

Brosnan plays a burnt-out assassin who, while on assignment in Mexico City, meets a depressed salesman (Kinnear) and the two form an unexpected friendship before parting. Six months later, the hit man turns up on the salesman's doorstep in the middle of night as he needs a partner for a critical job. Much comedy-tinged, action-filled suspense ensues.

The plot isn't deep, but this is part of the charm. Most films dealing with assassins and related subjects are fixated with having complicated plots filled with intriuging twists and turns. This, however, decides to concentrate on the characters, the comedy, and the stylish action and is boatloads of fun because of it. Also, Brosnan is absolutely incredible, delivering the best performance of his career. He completely disappears into the unique character of sleazebag hitter Julian Noble and is hilarious throughout. Imagine his James Bond character crossed with Billy Bob Thornton's Bad Santa character and you get a good idea of his awesome character and performance.

Overall, I definitely recommend this movie. It's just a great rollercoaster ride with tons of action and comedy. Thumbs up! :)
