The umpteenth computer-generated animation of the year, Open Season is an entertaining, if clichéd film. Martin Lawrence is the voice of Boog, a domesticated grizzly bear who is torn from his beloved human owner (Debra Messing), paired with a rambunctious mule deer sidekick (Ashton Kutcher), and forced to do battle with a rifle-toting madman hunter (Gary Sinise).

At under an hour-and-a-half, this is an easy viewing experience, with enough cute critters and over-the-top pratfalls for children and slightly edgy humor and occasional pop culture references for their parents. In a year overflowing with animated offerings for the family (The Ant Bully, Cars, and Over the Hedge are the standouts), however, it's hard to give a film this slight (and forgettable) more than a mild recommendation, even if it is cute fun while it lasts.

Catch a matinee or rent the DVD down the road.

The movie was pretty funny.
