Thumbs up Blood Diamond

View the trailer...

The lives of an ex-mercenery turned smuggler, a fisherman, and a journalist are forever changed by the desperate, treacherous search for a rare gem in genocide-torn Sierra Leone in Blood Diamond (now on DVD), a masterful film from the director of Glory, The Last Samurai, and Legends of the Fall.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou, both commanding, versatile actors dedicated to their craft, are brilliant, delivering performances devastating in their emotional power and depth. DiCaprio is my favorite actor and this is my favorite performance of his. It's a crime he didn't win the Academy Award (it was his third nomination, following The Aviator and What's Eating Gilbert Grape). Providing able support is Jennifer Connelly.

Blending explosive action-suspense with a relevant message, involving the titular gem, a diamond mined in a conflict zone and sold in order to finance an insurgent or invading army's war effort, the film is both entertaining and important. An instant classic. Highly recommended.

Leonardo DiCaprio's great. I wasn't a huge fan of Romeo + Juliet either, but The Aviator, Blood Diamond, Catch Me If You Can, The Departed, Gangs of New York, What's Eating Gilbert Grape... all excellent and he was excellent in them.

And, virgovictoria, I hope you enjoy it.

I liked it and thought DiCaprio was good, I can't stand Jennifer Connelly for some reason though.

Dot, I feel there are movies that you enjoy - that is, they entertain or push whatever emotional button you can relate to, kind of enjoy... And there are movies that educate you, movies that thrill you and so on. This is one of those movies, like Syriana and Munich and possibly The Aviator even, that challenges you, perhaps.

I did enjoy this movie. It held my attention. It angered me and enlightened me. The acting was, indeed, incredible.

Makes you want to walk into someplace, like Mervis Diamonds, perhaps, and ask, "Are any of these conflict diamonds?"
