| Great commentary Trevor, nothing could do greater damage to the patriotic desire to serve our nation then forcing people to do it. It also seems directly contradictory towards the legislative movement to decrease the number of bases and to capitalize on advanced technology over shear manpower volume that we have been undergoing for quite some time. The problem as I see it is that no one can foretell with certainty what the necessary staffing levels need to be at any given time. Thus there will be periods when the military will be stretched thin, like now, and other times when it appears that the military is overstaffed and unneeded. The two theater doctrine seemed like an adequate balance until we were involved in two battles while continuing to maintain the same level of presence around the globe. Given the current level of hostility directed at our nation, and the desires of many to see us destroyed, we need a larger then planned contingent of troops to assure our security and to conduct active operations. Not to mention that being engaged in ground combat is where and when the staffing burden becomes the greatest. It would be a breeze if we could pummel our adversaries mercilessly, but we won’t do that because of how it will make us appear to others sharing this world. Which I think is shear lunacy to worry about the perceptions others have of us that are not standing in our shoes. If we are willing to use our troops in combat we must be willing to do whatever is necessary to decimate those that seek our destruction as quickly and painlessly to our people as possible. Why is it that we are required to fight by arbitrary rules of war that do nothing but delay success and consume large numbers of our personnel? It is clear that our enemies don’t abide by these imposed rules and we shouldn’t have to either. If we returned to tactics like “shock and awe” these insurgents would be running home with their tails tucked tightly between their legs and they just might think twice before taking up arms against us or anyone ever again.
