Thoughts on a disgusting situation......

Pedophiles and the First Amendment: thoughts on a disgusting situation

"Warning:
This post contains commentary on an issue raised at another of the blogs on this network. The topic material involves pedophiles and first amendment rights, and is not suitable for all audiences. I know for a fact that it makes me feel pretty damn uncomfortable.

A couple of days ago, Shelley Batts put up a post discussing Barack Obama's attempts to take legal action against a self-professed pedophile who put a press release photo of Obama's kids up on his website, along with commentary handicapping the 2008 presidential election based on the "cuteness" of the candidates underage daughters and granddaughters. If that wasn't distasteful enough, a vocal proponent of "pedophile rights" has made an appearance in the comment thread of that post. Reading the comments associated with that post is enough to make me want to go grab a shower, but some - not much, but some - of the issues raised there are somewhat thought provoking."

Obama's attempt to get the material censored says about his own commitment to First Amendment rights.
That's bull####. The guy is supposed to champion the rights of some sicko whacking off to photos of his little children?????

How can they just use photos of a minor like that?

This is a deep subject. Too deep to discuss at length here.

I applaud Obama for wanting these perverts silenced, however he cannot.

According to the first Amendment free speech is practically unlimited. There are websites with pedophile sex stories all over the internet.Stories written by whacko's describing every kind of sick act that can be performed on children. However it is protected under the first amendment. Now: show one picture and they will be in jail for years.

The comments under a fully clothed picture of anyones kids no matter how foul are protected speech. Attack that speech and you hit that slippery slope all the journalists get frightened about. I certainly dont hold it against a candidate for wanting this garbage stopped. First Amendment rights be damned when someone attacks your kids.

The comment that Obama's angst says a lot about his commitment to the first Amendment are horse crap ,His angst tells me a lot about his commitment to his family and that absolves the other.

I wont vote for Obama, because he isnt the right man for the job right now, but if I were thinking of voting for Obama ,This would favor him in my mind.

One man even the President isnt going to change the first Amendment anyway.

Agreed. What would scare the hell out of me is if he said, "Oh la-de-dah, it's free speech and his right."

I fully support this guys rights to post such photos and commentary.

I also fully support Obama's right to hunt the POS down like an animal and shoot him in the kneecaps.

I totally agree, except for this:

fixed.

Free speech is broad, but political free speech is more protected. For instance one cannot say Bush is a murderer if he is another citizen without risking being sued, but saying it about him as a public political figure as part of political speech I think it is proteced political speech.
Obama's kids are public figures and an attack on them can be considered political free speech because it has to do with him, a political figure.....or something wierd like that I think.
