| You can have an airplane flying into a head wind of 500 mph and not move relative to the ground. Its the speed of air over the wings that create lift. Ever see a seagull floating in air or even moving backwards against the wind? |

| This is scary stuff. There is a reason they are only at 99.9 percent. If they made it to 100 it would form a black hole and destroy the planet. |

| The plane does not take off unless it has airspeed. Unless it has forward motion or a whole lot of wind, no takeoff.

I helped with our aviation merit badge counselor for our Boy Scout Troop - my buddy (helo pilot) spent about 4 hours going over instruments, navigation, lift, engine theory (combustible and turbine)... man - I had to learn a lot before I could even talk about it! I need to call him and see if I can get him on it - but he probably has already heard it...

Answer is unequivocally YES. The jet engines push the aircraft forward to lift off speed. The wheels are nothing more than legs to hold up the plane. They have nothing to do with propulsion, forward or backward motion. They can spin to pieces regardless how fast the conveyor goes. Read Cle's last link. Splains it very well. ![]()
