Iraqi authorities say the death toll from five days of intense fighting between Iraqi forces and Shi'ite militias has surged to more than 200.

There are reports that dozens of policemen in Sadr City surrendered their weapons to Sadr's forces, saying they could not fight their own people.


Despite a curfew imposed across Baghdad, mortar and rocket attacks continued to plague the Green Zone, the heavily fortified enclave in the capital that is home to the U.S. Embassy and most Iraqi government offices. One hit the office of Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi. He was not there, but police said three guards were killed.

In Baghdad, Iraqi police say U.S. helicopters carried out air strikes on the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City last night. Television footage shows destroyed buildings and the smoking wreckage of at least one car.

Hundreds of Iraqi civilians have been killed or injured this week in the government offensive.

Areas of Baghdad fall to militias as Iraqi Army falters in Basra


Iraq’s Prime Minister was staring into the abyss today after his operation to crush militia strongholds in Basra stalled, members of his own security forces defected and district after district of his own capital fell to Shia militia gunmen.
With the threat of a civil war looming in the south, Nouri al-Maliki’s police chief in Basra narrowly escaped assassination in the crucial port city, while in Baghdad, the spokesman for the Iraqi side of the US military surge was kidnapped by gunmen and his house burnt to the ground.
Saboteurs also blew up one of Iraq's two main oil pipelines from Basra, cutting at least a third of the exports from the city which provides 80 per cent of government revenue, a clear sign that the militias — who siphon significant sums off the oil smuggling trade — would not stop at mere insurrection.

Silly libtards. Can't see the big picture, can you? Its all OMG the surge isn't working Bush lied The fight with Mookie's Militia has been a long time coming and the sooner it and any other militia is defanged the sooner Iraq can stabilize. Mookie is already calling for another truce, he knows he can't stand against the new Iraq army and its US ally. The fact he's being ignored by his own militia says a lot about his actual clout. This is quite possibly the endgame in Iraq's struggle for democracy.
